The Waterboys Documentary A Wild and Beautiful Ride to Premiere Exclusively on Night Flight Plus May 9

Film Chronicles the Making of the Critically Acclaimed Album Life, Death and Dennis Hopper Featuring Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, Steve Earle, and Taylor Goldsmith

(May 7, 2025) — A Wild and Beautiful Ride, a new 48-minute documentary exploring the creation of The Waterboys’ latest album Life, Death and Dennis Hopper, will premiere exclusively on Night Flight Plus (nightflightplus.com) on Friday, May 9. The film will be released globally on YouTube the following Friday, May 16.

Directed by Mick Puck and Duende VisionsA Wild and Beautiful Ride takes viewers behind the scenes of a bold musical and spiritual journey. The film includes music from the album, location footage shot in New Mexico, and intimate reflections from the band’s lead singer and guitarist Mike Scott, who spent four years crafting the record.

Released on Sun Records on April 4, Life, Death and Dennis Hopper is a 25-track epic that traces the arc of a cultural icon while tackling the deeper questions of existence. Written and produced primarily by Scott alongside bandmates Famous James and Brother Paul, the album features guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, Steve Earle and Taylor Goldsmith.

“It begins in his childhood,” says Scott. “It ends the morning after his death, and I get to say a whole lot along the way—not just about Dennis, but about the whole strange adventure of being a human soul on planet Earth. The arc of his life was the story of our times. He was at the big bang of youth culture in Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean; the beginnings of Pop Art with the young Andy Warhol. He was part of the counterculture, hippie, civil rights, and psychedelic scenes of the '60s. In the '70s and '80s, he went on a wild 10-year rip, almost died, came back, got straight, and became a five-movies-a-year character actor—without losing the sparkle in his eye or the sense of danger or unpredictability that always gathered around him.”

The album has received widespread acclaim in the U.K., Europe, and the United States — just ahead of The Waterboys launching a worldwide tour on May 2 in support of the release.

Night Flight Plus, the exclusive streaming home for the documentary, is a premium subscription service inspired by the legendary 1980s TV series Night Flight, created by Stuart S. Shapiro. Described by Pitchfork as “the Punk Criterion Collection” and named “the best overall value among the subscription streamers” by The New York Times, Night Flight Plus offers a curated trove of cult classics, music documentaries, and hard-to-find cultural gems.

"The inaugural Ohana Music Festival in California kicked off Saturday night with a headlining set by Eddie Vedder, but the Pearl Jam singer made his presence felt all over the fest."
--RollingStone.com, August 28, 2016

After a successful launch in 2016 with more than 22,000 attendees, an array of impromptu pairings from the festival's artists and perfect beachside weather, OHANA DANA POINT will return to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, CA September 8-10The line-up for the expanded three-day second annual event will include performances from Social Distortion, Eddie Vedder, Jack Johnson, Pixies, Haim, Ray LaMontagne, Fiona Apple, Glen Hansard, The Naked And Famous, TV On The Radio and more than 25 acts (full 2017 line-up is below).

Eddie Vedder captured the essence of the event, saying from the stage: "Being able to hear music (maybe even live music) while you're on a wave...we did that today...To invent something, that the people who had the very last row have the best seat in the house, 'cause they can see the ocean and see the music...I hope you like it as much as we hoped and thought you would." And initial media response to the inaugural OHANA applauded the creation of a festival with strong support from the acts on the bill, many of whom spent the day at the festival and joined their contemporaries onstage:

Stereogum (August 28, 2016) noted: "Eddie Vedder performed at the first ever Ohana Festival at Dana Point, California's Doheny State Beach yesterday, and he really made the most of it. He joined Elvis Costello during his set to sing on 'What's So Funny,' X during their set to play 'The New World,' and former Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons during his set to cover Pink Floyd's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond,' and during his own set, he played 'Indifference' with professional surfer Kelly Slater and covered Neil Young's 'Rockin' In The Free World' with Band Of Horses, X, and Kelly Slater to close out the fest."
Orange County Register (August 28, 2016) added: "Eddie Vedder was all over Day One of the inaugural two-day Ohana Music Festival at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point on Saturday. Sure, he could have just showed up for his headlining turn and thanked the capacity crowd for its support of the San Onofre Parks Foundation and called it a night, but the 51-year-old Pearl Jam frontman made a full day of the event, popping up numerous times throughout."
OC Weekly, (August 29, 2016) said: "In addition to forging an ohana of great musicians and the fans of those musicians, Vedder was proud that he had achieved two things with this festival: 1) that he had provided some groovy tunes for the surfers of Doheny Beach to listen to while they were riding their waves and 2) that he had created a festival where the furthest seats from the stage (the topmost bleachers) were the best seats in the venue...Given his affections for his inspirations, revolutionary music, surfing, and a nurturing world, it is easy to see that Vedder's beach party was a great success."
The DOHENY DANA POINT 2017 line-up is as follows: Social Distortion, Eddie Vedder, Jack Johnson, Pixies, Ray Lamontagne, Haim, Fiona Apple, Glen Hansard, The Naked and Famous, TV On The Radio, Dr. Dog, The Orwells, The Frights, Vérité, Cameron Avery, Conner Youngblood, Simon Townshend, Missio, Ella Vos, The Mattson 2, Liam Finn, Timmy Curran, Jade Jackson and Corey Harper.
