New music: Collective Soul, GA-20 with Charlie Musselwhite, Brad "Guitar" Wilson

In this column I preview highly-anticipated albums from Collective Soul and a collaboration between GA-20 and Charlie Musselwhite both due Friday, July 31, as well as the newly-released Brad "Guitar" Wilson LP Boundless.

Title: Touch and Go (Fuzze-Flex Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Cars, Collective Soul, Devo

Tell me more: Collective Soul is back with another masterful album, Touch and Go (due July 31), loaded with winning original material that is bolstered by undeniable choruses, tight arrangements, lead vocalist Ed Roland's signature vocals and strong performances. Inspired by groundbreaking New Wave rock, notably The Cars, this album blends the best of the late 1970s and early '80s with Collective Soul's masterful modern rock touch. Catchy material to be sure, Touch and Go's standouts include the Cars-flavored opener "Rainbow," wistful synth-swept "Eye On You," dance-minded new wave rocker "Uh Oh," delightfully Devo-ish "Fun," dreamy "Feel" and anthemic album closer "Love Your Way." My favorite track is the sumptuous "All My Days On Thru," which soars and captures the euphoria of romantic bliss perfectly. 

Originally released earlier this spring as part of Record Store Day, Touch and Go will now be available globally via all digital outlets, as well on CD and 180-gram teal-marble colored vinyl. Collective Soul is currently on tour, and is scheduled to perform at Humphreys Concerts By The Bay in San Diego on Sept. 25, and at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, AZ on Sept. 26. Title: Blues  Now (New West Records)

Tell me more: Now 82, beloved Mississippi blues harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite impresses on the three advance tracks from the 10-track disc Blues Now where the Grammy winner has joined forces with the stellar Boston-based trio GA-20. The strength of the album (set for release on Friday, July 31) may well be rooted in the straightforward recording of the album; in early 2025 GA-20 booked six days of studio time at Rare Signals in Cambridge, MA and collected some of their favorite songs originally recorded by Elmore James, Junior Wells, Eddie Taylor, Jimmy Reed and even a couple of cuts off Musselwhite's own 1968 debut Stand Back! The idea was to record the songs quickly and capture the energy of Musselwhite's celebrated debut but with a contemporary spin. Listening to the initial trio of cuts from the Matthew Stubbs-produced Blues Now it's clear this was a mission fully accomplished. Indeed, blues lovers will want to hear the joyfully infectious Chicago blues cut "I Can't Hold Out," stylish take on Reed's 1962 ballad "I'll Change My Style" bolstered by Musselwhite's signature harmonica magic, and the fiery "Crazy Love." Blues Now is available across digital platforms, on audio CD, standard black vinyl and several limited edition color vinyl formats. GA-20 will perform at the Blues Heritage Festival in Tucson, AZ on Nov. 7, and at Tumbleroot Brewery in Santa Fe, NM on Nov. 8. Information: ga20band.com.

Tell me more: Singer-guitarist Brad "Guitar" Wilson showcases his distinctive style blending rock, blues, jazz and R&B on the newly-released Boundless. The songs were recorded in Hollywood, California's Musician's Institute Studios, Central California's Mondragon Studios, and at ICP Studios in Brussels, Belgium. Highlights include a reworked reading of the Roy Hawkins and Rick Darnell penned B.B. King classic "The Thrill Is Gone," blues-rock take on the 1961 Ray Charles hit "Hit the Road Jack," original Heartland-flavored rocker "Gonna Stay Or Go," a wonderful cover of Tears For Fears' Everybody Wants To Rule The World" (the latter enhanced by Wilson's sharp lead guitar playing), Americana sortie "Wild and Free," jazzy "San Francisco Nights" and smooth "Blues Magic." Tell me more: Nearly 30 years after their outstanding debut Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid introduced their fully original mix of melodic alternative rock and post-grunge to the world, Collective Soul continues to chart their own course with albums rooted in stellar songcraft, creative arrangements and inspired performances. "Cut The Cord" opens the album, a searing hard rocker bolstered by loads of crunchy guitar and a driving beat; the propulsive "Reason" enhanced by an especially melodic chorus follows. Title: Live From Hollywood (Frontiers Music Srl)

Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/guitar hero Orianthi is back with Live From Hollywood, a sharp 11-track set of hard-hitting melodic rock captured on Jan. 8, 2022 at the Bourbon Room in Hollywood, CA.  The release — available on audio CD/DVD and Blu-ray — sees the guitarist and her excellent five-member backing band playing songs from the Australia native's most recent release O (notably the hard rocking lead-off track "Contagious," soulful "Sinners Hymn" and edgy "Impulsive") and audience favorites like the kiss-off "What's It Gonna Be?" and stirring romantic cut "Blues Won't Leave Me Alone." Title: Black and Gold (AFM Records)

Tell me more: Tapping into the take-no-prisoners rock assault of AC/DC, Sweden's all-female rock outfit Thundermother delivers a dozen head banging tracks on Black and Gold (available via AFM Records on Aug. 19). Experts at fusing Guernica Mancini's signature lead vocals with riff rock, big choruses, guitar crunch and infectious rhythms, there is plenty for hard rock fans to celebrate across the band's fourth full-length release. The high voltage opener "The Light In The Sky," anthemic title track (featuring marvelous lead guitar from Filippa Nässil), bluesy power ballad "Hot Mess," driving rocker "Watch Out," snappy "Loud and Free" and explosive "Stratosphere" fully deliver on Thundermother's moniker. Thundermother will be on tour with Scorpions and Whitesnake beginning with a date in Toronto on Aug. 21. Tell me more: Armed with a wonderful tenor voice as well as a sharp knack for crafting literate and tuneful power pop, Croydon, England-based singer/multi-instrumentalist Nick Frater's myriad of talents are displayed in full across his forthcoming album Aerodrome Motel (coming to audio CD and via streaming platforms worldwide on Friday, Aug. 19 via Big Stir Records). Frater's last several albums (2021's Earworms and 2020's Fast & Loose) were critically acclaimed and the artist's latest effort continues that strong streak with a disc imbued with melody and musical hooks that grab the listener and (thankfully) don't let go. The stellar Aerodrome track listing includes the exuberant opener "The Pleasure Is Mine," driving "Love Heist," the harmonies-adorned "Stuck In My Ways," Americana-tinged ballad "No Hard Feelings." Tell me more: Modern rock heroes Goo Goo Dolls are back with a tuneful and infectious collection of 10 songs on their latest album Chaos in Bloom, the veteran outfit's first-ever album produced by frontman John Rzeznik. There is a lyrical depth and range of topics tackled by Rzeznik and Robby Takac across the album that was developed in the midst of the global pandemic. The driving opener "Yeah, I Like You" is a tuneful and uptempo delight. "War" is a more reflective take on relationships, the dynamics of the track creatively building with each measure as Rzeznik's signature vocals soar. VIBRATING sends the band’s artistic spirit into the next stratosphere. All ten songs positively pulsate with the boundless energy that has been COLLECTIVE SOUL’s aural calling card for over three decades. From the propulsively gnarly kiss-off of “Cut the Cord” to the reflective midtempo jangle of “Take” to the heart-wrenching reality check of “Rule No. 1” — replete with a soaring string section, no less! — to the choir-backed emotional crossroads of “Where Do I Go,” VIBRATING contains 42 minutes of irrefutable sonic evidence of a band wholly uninterested in sitting still.

 

“I think we’re on a roll,” observes Ed Roland, the band’s frontman and chief songwriter. “We’re not afraid to stretch the boundaries, but we do know how to stay in our lane when we need to. Sometimes, though, we just have to go faster.” As he continues, “Our fans have been waiting for VIBRATING for almost three years now, and I can’t wait for them to hear it. They’re excited because both SEE WHAT YOU STARTED and BLOOD set such a high standard for where we’re going as a band, and it’s only going to continue getting better with VIBRATING. I really do believe that.”

 

VIBRATING is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed tenth studio album, BLOOD, which was released June 21, 2019 on Fuzze-Flex Records/ADA. It garnered impressive debuts on various Billboard’s charts, including #3 on the “Alternative Albums” chart. Elsewhere, it debuted at #4 on the “Independent Albums” chart, #5 on the “Rock Albums” chart, #12 on the “Digital Albums” chart, #15 on the “Top Current Albums” chart, and #19 on the “Internet Albums” chart.

 

Seeing eye to eye, and ear to ear, is part of the secret sauce of why COLLECTIVE SOUL continues to both record and play together at an uncompromised level of high quality. “That’s the end goal for everybody in this band,” agrees Roland. “Just because I write the songs doesn’t mean I’m the only one who wants it all to come out right. We all want it to be right, and that’s because this is a band that acts like a band.”

 

Meanwhile in touring news, in addition to various headlining shows, the band will join forces with Switchfoot--for the very first time—for a massive summer tour that will launch Friday, July 15 in Gary, IN at the Hard Rock Casino. Ed Roland can’t wait to get the tour started. “It’s always a thrill to go on tour, but this year is going to be so special because we get to be with not only our friends but a great band, Switchfoot! Collective Soul’s triple-platinum sophomore album will be commemorated

with its first-ever vinyl pressing, while the CD and digital versions will include six bonus tracks

Legendary alt-rock band’s 1993 debut, Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid,

will also get its first wide-release on vinyl

Los Angeles, CA (June 16, 2020)—Craft Recordings announces a 25^th anniversary reissue of Collective Soul’s acclaimed self-titled sophomore album. Affectionately referred to as “The Blue Album,” Collective Soul followed the band’s hit 1993 debut, Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, and would go on to become the highest-selling title of their career. This special anniversary reissue—available on CD and across digital and streaming platforms on August 7^th— will include six bonus tracks, plus liner notes from music journalist Jeff Slate, with new insights from the band’s frontman and guiding creative force, Ed Roland.

Collective Soul will also be reissued in its original form on vinyl for the very first time, along with Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid. The latter pressing, which will be sold across all major music retailers, follows a limited-edition 2018 Record Store Day exclusive. Both LPs are set for an August 7^th release date and, along with all formats of Collective Soul, are available for pre-order today (6/16).

The anniversary edition of Collective Soul features all 12 original tracks plus six bonus tracks. These include live recordings of “December,” “Where the River Flows,” “When the Water Falls,” and “Bleed.” Also added is a studio recording of the song “That’s All Right,” which was previously only available on the Japanese edition of the album.

In addition to the wide vinyl reissue Collective Soul, fans can also look out for a special pressing on turquoise marble vinyl (matching the cover art). Limited to 1,000 copies, this version will be available exclusively through Bull Moose Records and Zia Records.

Formed in Stockbridge, GA in 1992 amid the rise of the grunge music scene, Collective Soul put their own spin on the genre, injecting influences of Southern hard rock and soul. The five-piece signed their first major record deal just one year later, following the massive success of their single “Shine.” Though their debut, Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, was culled primarily from demo recordings, the album went double-platinum. Seemingly overnight, Roland, Ross Childress (lead guitarist, backing vocals), Dean Roland (rhythm guitar), Will Turpin (bass, backing vocals), and Shane Evans (drums) were skyrocketed into international stardom.

Collective Soul, meanwhile, is regarded by Roland to be the band’s true debut. The album was written during downtime amid the band’s ascension—on the tour bus, between rehearsals, and in hotel rooms across the country. “I was writing like a fiend,” Roland recalls in the liner notes. “I would show the band new songs at soundcheck in the afternoon and we’d play them that night. That was our pre-production. And every day we had off, we were in the studio going for it, because I needed to get the band sounding the way I thought the band should sound, and get it out ASAP.”

These new songs included the single “Smashing Young Man,” inspired during the band’s time in England, and the chart-topping hit “Where the River Flows,” written about Roland’s mid-tour breakup with a girlfriend. Another fan-favorite off the record, “The World I Know,” was penned during a stop in New York City. “I had met this girl—the first girl I’d met on the road—and I was trying to impress her,” recalls Roland. “I told her, ‘I’m going to walk around for an hour. I’ve got this chord progression and this melody in my head.’ Back then, Times Square was still kind of hard. You’d walk by homeless people, and you’d see stretch limos, with people getting out with furs on. So when I got back, I used that concept, and threw in some spirituality, too.”

Roland produced the album along with old friend and collaborator Matt Serletic, who would go on to helm best-selling titles by Matchbox Twenty, Joe Cocker and Taylor Hicks, and later serve as chairman of Virgin Records. Released in March 1995, Collective Soul proved the band’s creative prowess. The album peaked at No.23 on the Billboard 200 and spent a whopping 76 weeks on the chart. It would eventually be certified triple-platinum by the RIAA.

Collective Soul also yielded five singles, including “December,” “The World I Know,” and “Where The River Flows”—all three of which went to No.1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. “December” and “The World I Know,” meanwhile, both hit the Billboard Hot 100 Top 20, and peaked at No.2 and No.1, respectively, on the Canadian pop charts.

25 years on, Roland still looks back the mid-’90s fondly, when, at 30, he was finally able to enjoy the fruits of his labors. “People always say you have your whole life to make your first record, and then the other ones are harder to write,” he says. “To me, it was the opposite. It took me my whole life to be able to get that first record out, and all of a sudden I could pay my rent. I could buy a car. That took so much pressure off.”

He adds, “I’m not afraid to say that I’m very proud of our body of work. We overcame a lot. We sustained and survived through it all, and continue to make new music. So I’m thankful to everybody who’s been supportive of us.”

To date, the Atlanta-based group has released a total of ten studio albums, and continues to actively tour and release new material—including 2019’s Blood and 2015’s critically acclaimed See What You Started by Continuing, which topped Billboard’s Alternative Album chart, and peaked at No.4 on the Rock Albums chart.
