Catching up on 2017: The Tragically Hip, Jerry Yester, Uriah Heep, Dolores O'Riordan
Before being fully immersed by 2018, I wanted to take a listen back at some terrific late-2017 releases as well as an overlooked classic from 2012 deserving of renewed attention.

Tell me more: Somehow I didn't get around to spinning Jerry Yester's wonderful Pass Your Light Around around the time of its release in October 2017. Stupid me. The long-lost collection of Yester's 1970s recordings is an outstanding 15-track collection (filled with songs the artist co-wrote with Larry Bekett) complete with a 16-page booklet that provides lyrics and extensive liner notes providing details about these timeless songs. The breezy "My Dusty Darling," harmonies-styled "Brooklyn Girl" and ambitious folk rocker "Showboat" are among early highlights on the disc, while the countrified "Dance For Me, Anna Lee," poetic piano ballad "The Minutes" and genre-defying "Across The Persian Gulf" resonate decades after they were originally captured on tape. The versions featured on the release will thrill fans of Uriah Heep; the straight-forward rocker "Bad Bad Man," inspired rocker "Cry Freedom," Journey-flavored "Stealin'," the rousing audience-favorite "Too Scared To Run" and the power ballad "More Fool You" all deliver via energetic live performances. Tell me more: The tragic death of 46-year-old Irish singer Dolores O'Riordan on Jan. 15, 2018 has led to renewed interest in the work of the beloved artist. As lead singer of The Cranberries (as well as a member of the trio D.A.R.K.), O'Riordan left a stellar collection of recordings that extend beyond the group's best-known '90s hits ("Linger," "Zombie," "Salvation"). The Cranberries' final full-length studio LP Roses was released in October 2012 and has been a welcome part of this writer's music collection since its release. The songs here soar as high as O'Riordan's dazzling soprano, with "Conduct," "Tomorrow" and the haunting "Show Me" among the stirring originals. In addition, those want to further explore O'Riordan's enduring musical legacy should pick up the final Cranberries album (2017's live collection Something Else) and D.A.R.K.'s 2014 studio LP Science Agrees. Tell me more: Two companion releases celebrating the The Tragically Hip (available on blu-ray, DVD and digitally) were released in December 2017. The Canadian troupe – often referred to as simply The Hip – embarked on its 2016 Man Machine Poem tour knowing it would be the quintet's final tour. With lead singer Gord Downie's having recently learned of his diagnosis of having terminal brain cancer, The Tragically Hip ultimately was able to chronicle the end of their 30+ year run with both a documentary featuring rehearsals and glimpses of The Hip's 15-date Canada-spanning tour (Long Time Running, directed by Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier) and a moving concert film captured at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in the band's hometown of Kingston, Ontario on Aug. 20, 2016 ( "A National Celebration"). Downie lost his battle fighting cancer on Oct. 17, 2017, but both A National Celebration (originally aired live by CBC, the concert was reportedly viewed by one-third of Canadians and is among the biggest events in the nation's broadcast history) and Long Time Running prove to be lasting and profound reminder of his and the band's important place on the rock landscape. D.A.R.K. bandmates remember Dolores O'Riordan
Although Dolores O'Riordan is best known for her work with The Cranberries, she also released a solo album (2007's Are You Listening? and 2009's No Baggage) and worked with D.A.R.K. (a group featuring former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and musician/DJ Olé Koretsky) beginning in April 2014. Since O'Riordan's tragic death on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, sales of The Cranberries' music has spiked; indeed, her first band has four of the top 10 digital albums at Amazon.com and five of the top 10 on Amazon's Best-Selling CDs/Vinyl chart too. It's with overwhelming sadness that D.A.R.K. has announced the death of Dolores O'Riordan who passed away suddenly at the age of 46 in London, England on January 15, 2018. Dolores is also known for being the lead singer of successful Irish rock band the Cranberries.
"I am heartbroken and devastated by the news of the sudden and unexpected passing of Dolores," said band mate and member of The Smiths, Andy Rourke. "I have truly enjoyed the years we spent together and feel privileged to call her a close friend. It was a bonus to work with her in our band D.A.R.K. and witness firsthand her breathtaking and unique talent. I will miss her terribly. I send my love and condolences to her family and loved ones."
Band mate and partner Olé Koretsky adds, "My friend, partner, and the love of my life is gone. My heart is broken and it is beyond repair. Dolores is beautiful. Her art is beautiful. Her family is beautiful. The energy she continues to radiate is undeniable. I am lost. I miss her so much. I will continue to stumble around this planet for some time knowing well there's no real place for me here now."
Born on September 6, 1971, Dolores first rose to prominence with band The Cranberries with the release of platinum-selling debut album Everyone Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? in 1993 which yielded the worldwide hits "Dreams" and "Linger." With seven albums as the Cranberries, two solo albums, and one album for D.A.R.K., Dolores leaves a rich legacy and a wealth of breathtaking recordings.
At the time of her passing, she was in London, working on a mixing session with Martin Glover / “Youth” for the follow-up to Science Agrees which hopes to see a future release as that would have been Dolores' wish.

Music World Remembers Dolores O’Riordan

The music world was stunned yesterday to learn of the sudden death of singer-songwriter Dolores O'Riordan at the age of 46.
A statement from the singer's publicist said: "The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session."
Here is an official statement posted by The Cranberries on the band's official Twitter handle:
We are devastated on the passing of our friend Dolores. She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to have been part of her life from 1989 when we started the Cranberries. The world has lost a true artist today.

Last night, TJR and I videotaped a tribute to Dolores O'Riordan. There were not many details available, but our aim in making this video tribute was to celebrate the Irish singer's legacy, and the wonderful music she left for all of us:
