Los Angeles – August 2, 2021 – The Beach Boys forthcoming new box set, Feel Flows – The Sunflower and Surf’s Up Sessions 1969-1971due August 27 via Capitol/UMe, boasts 135 tracks, including 108 previously unreleased tracks, live recordings, radio promos, alternate versions, alternate mixes, isolated backing tracks and a cappella versions, culled from the album sessions.
Ahead of the release, The Beach Boys have shared two more unreleased tracks: a stunning a cappella version of “Surf’s Up,” the eponymous closing track of their 1971 album, initially written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks for the famously aborted Smile album, and a reimagined mix of “This Whole World,” one of the many standouts from 1970’s Sunflower. This exquisite iteration of “Surf’s Up” allows listeners to hear the band’s unadulterated vocals and impeccable harmonies in their purest form. Brian’s lead vocal for the second section of the song was recorded in December 1966 during the Smile sessions while the other vocal parts were added in 1971. The version of “This Whole World” was newly created for Feel Flows and features an alternate lead vocal take from Carl Wilson, a lead vocal part from Brian Wilson on the bridge that wasn’t used on the original, and an alternate ending originally recorded for an Eastern Airlines commercial that the group appeared in briefly. Part of Eastern’s popular “Wings of Man” advertising campaign, the ad focused on Southern California and featured the song under narration from Orson Welles. This coda has never been heard anywhere since the commercial aired in 1971. These latest releases follow the live version of fan favorite “Susie Cincinnati” and an early, folky incarnation of “Big Sur.”

The expansive 5CD box set chronicles and explores in depth this metamorphic and highly influential 1969-1971 period of the band’s legendary career. Assembled by Mark Linett and Alan Boyd, the team behind 2013’s GRAMMY® Award-winning SMiLE Sessions, the expansive collection features newly remastered versions of Sunflower and Surf’s Up and boasts 135 tracks, including 108 previously unreleased tracks, live recordings, radio promos, alternate versions, alternate mixes, isolated backing tracks and a cappella versions, culled from the album sessions.

Housed in a book style package, the set is rounded out with a 48-page book loaded with unreleased and rare photos, lyric sheets, tape box images, recording artifacts, insightful new liner notes by noted radio veteran and Beach Boys afficionado Howie Edelson, and new and archival interviews from Al JardineBrian WilsonBruce JohnstonCarl WilsonDennis WilsonMike Love, and others. Feel Flows will also be released in abbreviated versions including 4LP on both black vinyl and limited edition Translucent Blue and Translucent Gold color vinyl, 2LP black vinyl and 2CD editions.

Feel Flows is already receiving rave reviews across the US and UK with Uncut featuring it as their Reissue of the Month and awarding it a 9/10 review that states “Feel Flows is emphatic proof that The Beach Boys never stopped making sublime, artful, spiritually invested music,” adding “Sunflower and Surf’s Up represent their second great peak.” Mojo declared in their 4/5 review that “Feel Flows is full of little revelations, glimpses of The Beach Boys’ haphazardly evolving, still magical process in the early ’70s,” while Goldmine’s current cover feature details the making of the collection and includes a perfect 5-star review that exclaims “Sunflower and Surf’s Up are rightly regarded as among The Beach Boys’ best efforts, and the bonus tracks enrich the experience.” Ultimate Classic Rock quite simply proclaims “Feel Flows soundly confirms their standing as one of the era's all-time greats.”

Album reviews: The Turtles, the Beach Boys, the Cult, KISS, 'Ben-Hur' soundtrack

A new crop of releases will allow listeners to rediscover classic '60s-spawned heroes the Turtles and Beach Boys, as well as enduring hard rock icons the Cult and KISS. The soundtrack for the new movie "Ben-Hur" scored by Marco Beltrami rounds out this writer's list of essential new releases.

Artist: The Turtles
Title: All the Singles (Manifesto Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Turtles, the Hollies, the Kinks
Tell me more: Spanning a shimmering cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" released in June 1965 to the sweeping baroque pop nugget "Me About You" released in late 1970, the Turtles' lasting legacy is celebrated across the glorious All the Singles. The two-disc, 48-track collection allows plenty of time to explore the Los Angeles-spawned group's radio hits as well as more experimental material that draws comparisons with the Kinks and the Byrds. With Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman's artful and wonderful harmony vocals leading the way, the material ranges from folk-rock (the Warren Zevon-penned "Like the Seasons"), garage rock ("Almost There," "Outside Chance"), power-pop ("She'd Rather Be With Me," "Elenore"), sunshine pop ("So Goes Love," "On a Summer's Day"), psychedelic ("Sound Asleep") and even country ("Who Would Ever Think That I Would Marry Margaret"). The Turtles' 1967 number 1 hit "Happy Together" remains one of that decade's most enticing songs and has never sounded better thanks to the remastering from Bill Inglot and Dave Schultz showcased across this must-have collection. Information: manifesto.com.

Artist: The Beach Boys
Title: Becoming the Beach Boys: The Complete Hite & Dorinda Morgan Sessions (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean
Tell me more: Lovers of the Beach Boys will want to get Becoming the Beach Boys: the Complete Hite & Dorinda Morgan Sessions, which is being released by Omnivore Recordings on Aug. 26. The lovingly-remastered recordings on the collection date back to September 1961 when brothers Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson along with Mike Love and Al Jardine shared a microphone together at the home of Hite and Dorinda Morgan to demo recordings eight months before they signed a contract with Capitol Records There are nine songs the young group recorded between September 1961 and March 1962, with multiple demos and versions for each of the songs included here. Listening to the magic and craft of even the earliest takes of "Surfin' Safari," "Surfer Girl" and several obscure songs is to be dazzled that every member of the young group was 20 or younger (Carl Wilson was only 15 when they cut their first demo of "Surfin' "). Fifty-five years into their career, the Beach Boys remain one of modern music's most important architects and a glimpse at the origins of that ride can be found here. Information: omnivorerecordings.com.

Artist: The Cult
Title: Hidden City (Cooking Vinyl)
You might like if you enjoy: AC/DC, Band of Skulls, the Church
Tell me more: If I hadn't caught the Cult in the band's winning performance opening for Guns N' Roses at Dodger Stadium earlier this month, I might have missed the fact the band issued a new album earlier this year. Hidden City is a superb effort, branded with the band's blend of hard and goth rock. On the band's first album since 2012's "Choice of Weapon," singer Ian Astbury and guitar hero Billy Duffy lead the ensemble through a dozen original songs that deliver on the outfit's past glories while forging ahead. "Dark Energy," "No Love Lost" and the infectious "Dance the Night" rock with unbridled power yet capture the shadowy sonics that have been a part of the group's sound since the 1980s. The Cult is no one-trick pony and explores an expansive and lush modern rock soundscape on the reflective "In Blood." The hypnotic "Birds of Paradise," rocking "Goat" (which recalls the Cult's Electric period) and progressive "Deeply Ordered Chaos" are other standouts on a stunning return. Information: thecult.us.

Purchase 'Hidden City' here

Artist: KISS
Title: Kiss Rocks Vegas (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: Kiss, AC/DC
Tell me more: In November 2014, KISS performed a string of intimate shows at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Now, KISS Rocks Vegas captures highlights from those dates via a multi-format release (including DVD+CD, Blu-ray+CD and DVD+2LP versions). The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers perform a mix of hard rocking hits and deeper material, including the iconic "Detroit Rock City" (with an impressive twin guitar attack from Paul Stanley and Tommy Thayer), hard hitting "Psycho Circus," blazing "Parasite" and an extended version of "Lick It Up" (the latter which incorporates part of the instrumental bridge of The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" into its run). For hardcore fans of KISS, the DVD track listing also delivers an acoustic set including a bluesy take on "Coming Home" and folk rock version of the band's ballad "Beth." Information: eagle-rock.com.

Buy 'KISS Rocks Vegas' (Amazon Exclusive) [Blu-ray]

Artist: Marco Beltrami
Title: Ben-Hur: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Sony Classical)
You might like if you enjoy: Rupert Gregson-Williams, Hans Zimmer
Tell me more: Marco Beltrami is not your average composer. The Academy Award-nominated Beltrami has scored a number of eclectic films ("Scream," "3:10 to Yuma," "The Hurt Locker") and provided each with a unique sonic world that fits perfectly with the film. On "Ben-Hur," his soundtrack includes ancient Greek and Roman instruments (aulos, citira, lyres, salpinx) that he has processed electronically so his score blends old and new in an exciting ways that lure the listener at every turn. There are tracks that are simply gorgeous ("Ben-Hur Theme," "Dear Messala, "Messala and Tirzah, "Horse Healer"), and others that are wonderfully tense or haunting ("Carrying Judah," "Brothers Divide"). "Jesus Arrested" recalls some of the otherworldly material released by modern-day group Dead Can Dance, with the mix of a mournful soprano and powerful drumming capturing the intensity of the moment. The Beach Boys warm hearts at Segerstrom

My review was originally posted on The Orange County Register Web site on Monday morning, Dec. 9, 2013.

The Mike Love-led group's debut at Segerstrom Hall was a fast-paced nostalgia trip.

Mike Love, left, led the Beach Boys in concert on Dec. 7. Photo: Segerstrom Center for the Arts
Rarely has the real-life tale of a legendary ensemble been so at odds with its soundscape as the Beach Boys.
While the Southern California group ignited the world with feel-good songs chronicling surfing, pretty girls and cool hot rods in the early '60s, the Beach Boys' half-century-long story includes a Shakespeare-worthy cast featuring brothers Dennis Wilson (who drowned in 1983), Carl Wilson (who died of cancer in 1998) and creative ringleader Brian Wilson, whose tragic journey has been infamously marked by a number of demons, substance abuse and mental health issues among them.
Adding to bad blood that wasn't given a momentary transfusion until last summer's 50th anniversary reunion are years of legal wrangling, at one point over the band's name and songwriting credits shared between Brian Wilson and his cousin, singer Mike Love.
Yet Saturday night (Dec. 7, 2013) the group's debut at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa brought a mostly joyful celebration of the group's legacy, as led by Love and longtime singer-songwriter and keyboardist Bruce Johnston, who joined the band with the departure of interim member Glen Campbell in April 1965.
With the exception of a poignant rendition of "God Only Knows" – for which Carl's signature vocal performance was blended via technology with players at Segerstrom Hall, while vintage pictures of the original troupe were projected behind the stage – this was a crowd-pleasing, nostalgic romp through dozens of classic tunes unleashed over a fast-paced 110 minutes.
Opening with "Do It Again," an excellent five-man touring band backed Love and Johnston, providing solid firepower and vocal magic to help re-create the harmonies so vital to the Beach Boys' harmony-rich sound. Who can argue with a night of so many beloved hits played in faithful fashion?
Love's voice remains strong and worthy of showcasing in solo sections, his pipes working especially well on "409," "Sloop John B" and a night-ending run through "Surfin' U.S.A." But everybody else got a chance to shine, too.
Bassist-singer Randell Kirsch's tenor soared on a lovely "Don't Worry Baby," while lead guitarist Scott Totten sang effectively on a shimmering version of "The Warmth of the Sun." Guitarist Christian Love contributed to an affecting take on "Good Vibrations," while keyboardist Tim Bonhomme's work enhanced the set throughout.
A few selections veered away from big hits: the catchy surf gem "Hawaii," the Johnston-sung "Disney Girls," the bluesy nugget "Wild Honey" and a six-minute medley of holiday tunes pulled from the group's classic 1964 Christmas album, including "White Christmas," "The Man with All the Toys," "Santa's Beard" and a rousing "Little Saint Nick." My favorite offbeat choice, though, was a Crosby, Stills & Nash-style handling of the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'," with Totten's 12-string guitar adding haunting overtones.
Ultimately, the night was about the Beach Boys' singular, gently intoxicating sound, one that still encapsulates those carefree days before the painful realities of adulthood kick in. But watching this enthusiastic, boomer-heavy crowd cheer, sing and clap along, rising to their feet when the band launched into a favorite oldie, was to see the timeless power of that endless summer fully on display.

For fans of all ages, this is the concert of a lifetime.

The new DVD comes on the heels of a remarkably productive year for THE BEACH BOYS which saw the release of their first new album in sixteen years, THAT'S WHY GOD MADE THE RADIO (Capitol / Brother Records), and THE BEACH BOYS: DOIN' IT AGAIN which features live performances, behind-the-scenes exclusives from the 2012 recording sessions, as well as never-before-seen footage from the 1966 'Good Vibrations' recording sessions, and moving tributes to founding members Carl and Dennis Wilson.

Said Marc Bennett, Co-Director of The Beach Boys 50 - Live in Concert: "To document this once-in-a-lifetime moment in music history as The Beach Boys embarked on their 50th year anniversary world tour was an experience I still have not come down from. This show is a solidification of their legacy and a tribute to creative endurance and artistic achievement that crosses all cultural and geographical boundaries. In spite of the obstacles they may have encountered over the years, they have reached this 50th year milestone as few bands have ever done, or even imagined. What they leave behind, as captured in this performance, is a body of work that is indelibly etched in music history and popular culture on a global level."

"It was truly an honor to be allowed to capture this historic performance. The song selection allows fans both new and old a chance to fully appreciate the span and depth of the Beach Boys catalogue. This DVD includes performances from their hits in the early 60s to selections from their latest Top 3 Album. To be able to film all five surviving members of this historic band, together one more time... was certainly a dream come true." Joe Thomas, Co-Director of The Beach Boys 50 - Live in Concert

"The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary tour meant so much to me personally; performing with the guys again was an absolute thrill. I'm so glad we captured it on film so that everyone, whether you were there or not, will be able to see what an historic event it was." Brian Wilson

"The 50th Anniversary Tour was a historic, special event. This DVD captures the tour brilliantly and marks an important, iconic moment in time in our band's history. It's a moment I am deeply proud of." Mike Love
