March 30, 2021—Garbage will share their seventh studio album No Gods No Masters on June 11 via Stunvolume/Infectious Music; pre-save/pre-order HERE.  The record’s debut single “The Men Who Rule the World” and its accompanying mixed media video—created by Chilean film director, animator and painter Javi.MiAmor—are out today, stream/share HERE.
“This is our seventh record, the significant numerology of which affected the DNA of its content: the seven virtues, the seven sorrows, and the seven deadly sins,” says the band’s iconic frontwoman Shirley Manson of the album and its twists and turns from capitalism and lust to loss and grief. “It was our way of trying to make sense of how fucking nuts the world is and the astounding chaos we find ourselves in. It’s the record we felt that we had to make at this time.”
“The Men Who Rule the World,” the opening track of No Gods No Masters, is a protest song – a searing indictment and call to arms critiquing of the rise of capitalist short-sightedness, racism, sexism and misogyny across the world. It’s a clear statement of intent from a band who still believe in the power of dissent, setting the tone for the rest of the record.

Produced by Garbage and long-time collaborator Billy Bush, the seeds for No Gods No Masters were planted in summer 2018 in the desert in Palm Springs. The quartet – Manson and bandmates Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig – convened at a home belonging to one of Marker’s relatives and sketched out the skeleton of the album over two weeks, jamming, experimenting and feeling the songs out. They then took those demos and went their separate ways before connecting in Los Angeles to finish the record.
Garbage will unveil a deluxe CD/digital version of No Gods No Masters featuring covers of classic tracks by David Bowie, Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen along with rare Garbage originals. The deluxe version also features new voices, with appearances from Screaming Females, Brody Dalle, Brian Aubert, John Doe and Exene Cervenka. The album will also be in record stores starting June 12 as part of RSD Drops and will be available in limited edition pink vinyl, featuring alternate cover art.
Since releasing their eponymous debut album in 1995, Garbage has blazed a unique sonic trail, garnering critical acclaim and amassing a passel of hits as well as seven Grammy nominations along the way to 17 million albums sold.

Garbage revisits glorious past; previews future in Las Vegas

Performing for just under two hours on Friday night, Garbage performed a wide-ranging concert that celebrated the band's 25-year history while previewing a memorable new song that came in the encore.

Garbage began its current tour in late September in connection with the 20th anniversary of band's terrific sophomore album Version 2.0 (originally released in May 1998), which was re-released as a must-own and expanded deluxe edition in June 2018. That album's original track listing and some of the wonderful B-sides and bonus tracks the quartet recorded in the late 1990s (also included on the recent deluxe edition) were presented at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas resort on Friday night, Oct. 5, 2018.

Through the fast-moving fog of time it's easy to forget how groundbreaking Garbage was when they emerged with their self-titled debut album in August 1995. In an era personified by American grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.) and a testosterone-fueled sonic aesthetic of the day, here was a band fronted by Scottish female singer Shirley Manson where the bona fide power of modern rock was artfully fused with electronica and an emphasis on creating masterful songs. In addition to Manson (lead vocals, guitar), top-tier American musicians Duke Erikson (guitar, keyboards), Steve Marker (guitar) and Butch Vig (percussion) have always been fully involved in the creation and production of the troupe's original material. 
Watching Garbage perform in Las Vegas was to be fully reminded how well the outfit's songcraft and talents as musicians have endured. Manson — with eye-catching makeup to match her dramatic attire — was engaged with the audience and relaxed even when their was a technical glitch forcing the band to re-start "Special" early on. "Let's take a moment to recover," Manson mused. "Good evening Las Vegas."

 The subsequent 2.0 performance of "Special" was epic and thrilled the crowd, the song's iconic verses and soaring choruses hitting the collective mark. That masterful performance was followed by decidedly dark, post-goth take on the group's theme song for the 1999 James Bond flick "The World Is Not Enough." That alluring track had an almost symphonic feel, with the song growing in power to an impact-filled finale.

There was also a sense of paying tribute to seminal artists who came before Garbage, laying the groundwork for bands willing to make their mark in rock's rich tapestry. Early in the wide, on the band's cool "Wicked Ways" Garbage suddenly segued into Depeche Mode's blues rocker "Personal Jesus." Garbage pulled off a similar feat several times later in the set, finishing off the forceful rocker "13x Forever" with a bit of The Kinks' wistful 1965 hit "Tired of Waiting for You." Garbage ended its regular set with the fiery "You Look So Fine," wrapped up with a reworked slice of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams."

 "It's not a normal Garbage set," Manson explained before the band's performance of "Hammering In My Head," a song she added was the "only party song we've ever written." She then noted that this night would feature a set of songs "you've never heard."

Manson wasn't kidding about this night's foray into distant musical worlds. Among the cuts showcased was the group's absolutely stunning take on the Big Star classic "Thirteen" — the 1972 song chronicling adolescence retained its melancholy-draped moodscape even while reworked with Garbage's signature sound. Another strong cover, The Seeds' 1965 "Can't Seem To Make You Mine," included Manson even pounding out keyboards to fire up the garage rock classic.

 For sure, many fans on hand at The Chelsea responded loudest with the performance of the band's best-known material ("Special," "I Think I'm Paranoid," "Push It"), but this writer was most impressed by the eclectic mix of originals and covers, played with a sense of artistry and pure fun.

 Garbage delivered a solid three-song encore to cap a great concert, with the simmering rocker "The Trick Is To Keep Breathing," introspective 2017 original "No Horses" and the night-ending electronica-flavored "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)."

 Combine the musical instincts of Warpaint, Eddie Vedder and Björk and you might well come up with Sacramento, California' duo Rituals Of Mine. Performing a 30-minute set of hard-hitting songs whose lyrical tides dealt mostly with relationships, the crowd welcomed and cheered the twosome's high-octane electronica/rock fusion.

Rock icons featured on masterworks

This summer has been a terrific season for those who love new music, deluxe reissues and highly-anticipated live sets.


Artist: The Alarm
Title: Equals (Twenty First Century Recording Company)
You might like if you enjoy: U2, Simple Minds, Big Country
Tell me more: The Alarm's first album since 2010, Equals may well be the Rhyl, Wales-spawned troupe's best new studio LP since the final disc that featured the band's all-original lineup (1991's Raw"). Singer-songwriter Mike Peters' high-flying voice not only sounds the equal it did on the band's classic '80s material, but his message of love, diversity and faith rings more true than ever across the 11 original songs that comprise this stellar set. Equals is loaded with signature-styled anthems that are bolstered by infectious hooks and choruses. The straightforward lyrics here are in tune with the times to be sure, capturing Peters' belief in a better and more compassionate world. Songs such as the U2-flavored "Two Rivers," the intoxicating "Beautiful," probing "Crowd Trouble" and impassioned "Peace Now" are among the most spirited rockers ever crafted by the band; the hard-charging "Coming Backwards" also features some winning fretwork from Cult guitarist Billy Duffy. Other notable tracks include the textured folk rocker "Transatlantic" and bluesy "Hellfire." In addition to Peters' outstanding work on acoustic guitar and harmonica, credit for the LP's musical power extends to a sensational lineup featuring Smiley (drums, percussion, backing vocals), James Stevenson (guitar, backing vocals), Jules Jones Peters (piano and backing vocals) and George Williams (keyboards, bass guitar) . Good news for fans in Southern California; The Alarm is scheduled to perform at the Belly Up in Solana Beach on Aug. 23, at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Aug. 24 and at The Rose in Pasadena on Aug. 25. Tell me more: Initially released in May 1998, Garbage's sophomore album Version 2.0 included enduring tracks "I Think I'm Paranoid," "Push It" and "Special." In addition to earning four Grammy Award nominations, the LP sold more than four million copies and pushed the boundaries of modern rock. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the disc, Garbage has released Version 2.0: 20th Anniversary Edition. The expanded edition features the original 12-track remastered album on disc one, and 10 B-sides from the era on a second audio disc. Listening to the magnificent recording is to be reminded how contemporary and vital the album sounds even in 2018. The blend of melodic rock songcraft, groundbreaking digital effects and dynamic performances resonate fully in the here and now. Beyond the disc's '90s hits are a wealth of equally-recommended tracks; the electronica-draped rocker "Temptation Waits," tuneful "When I Grow Up," dreamy "The Trick is to Keep Breathing" and pulsating "Dumb" rival the radio hits. Moving to the second disc the urgent "13X Forever," opulent "Deadwood" and a sumptuous must-hear cover of the Big Star classic "Thirteen" are among the joyful entries chronicled. Title: At Your Birthday Party (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: R.E.M., the Smithereens
Tell me more: The melodic rock of indie band Guadalcanal Diary sounds as strong today as when the Marietta, Georgia-spawned band issued four full-length LPs courtesy of Elektra Records across the mid- and late 1980s. The newly-issued At Your Birthday Party adds an important chapter to the college rock favorite's short but storied history. The quartet's performance — recorded in January 1998 during a brief return — explodes from the get go. A blend of jangly melodic gems ("Trail of Tears," "Newborn,"), art damage ("Say Please") and more forceful independent rockers ("Country Club Gun," "Pretty is as Pretty Does," "The Likes of You") are unleashed with artful force. Material from all four of the band's original albums is covered on the concert recording, including the band's beloved hit "Watsui Rodeo." A year after the concert heard here was recorded on a 16-track recorder at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta, At Your Birthday Party was self-released as big "thank you" to fans of the band. The exciting new reissue has the added bonus of including new liner notes penned by frontman Murray Attaway. Omnivore Recordings has released this essential title for all to hear. Make sure you do. Title: From the Vault: No Security — San Jose 1999 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones
Tell me more: After kicking off their concert with a sizzling version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash," you might think it would be tough for The Rolling Stones to up their ante for another two hours. No need to worry. As evidenced on the new multi-format concert film and audio release "From the Vault: No Security — San Jose 1999," the enduring British rockers were more than ready to ride that opening salvo throughout the concert event. The rocking "Bitch," "Respectable" (with singer Mick Jagger playing some mean rhythm guitar), the sassy "Honky Tonk Woman," aptly-titled "I Got the Blues" and rarely-heard acoustic flavored "Saint Of Me" are all early standouts in the full-length performance. Later in the show, the capacity crowd (and viewers watching the wonderful concert film) are treated to affecting takes of "Paint It Black," a cover of Bobby Troup's "Route 66," "Tumbling Dice" and the night-ending one-two punch of "Brown Sugar" and "Sympathy for the Devil." Indeed, the night's set list packed in Rolling Stones hits spanning from the 1960s to the then recently-released 1997 "Bridges to Babylon" album. The latest title in the band's "The Vault" series, "No Security — San Jose 1999" is available as DVD + 2CD, Blu-ray + 2CD, 3LP and digital configurations. Information: www.eagle-rock.com.

Garbage and Blondie to co-headline 'Rage and Rapture Tour' in Summer 2017

Garbage and Blondie today (Feb. 8, 2017) announced a co-headline North American tour that will kick off on July 5, 2017 in Saratoga, CA and wrap on August 12, 2017 in Dallas, TX. John Doe & Exene Cervenka will provide support on the first leg of the tour and Deap Vally for the second leg. Tickets for the Rage and Rapture tour go on sale starting Friday, February 17 at 10:00am local time (please check venue websites for most up-to-date on sale information). Garbage is Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig. After forming in Madison, WI, Garbage released their self-titled debut album in 1995. The band's unique sound and provocative visual aesthetic, inspired massive worldwide attention and success. Their follow up album, Version 2.0, released in 1998, topped charts all over the world and garnered multiple Grammy Award nominations including Album Of The Year. Garbage went on to release two more albums: 2001's Beautiful Garbage and 2005's Bleed Like Me, the latter of which earned the band its highest chart position with a No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.
