New music: Ollee Owens, Continental Drifters, Beth Hart, The Armoires

In this column I highlight a number of outstanding new audio titles available now.

Artist:
Ollee Owens
Title: Nowhere to Hide (Ollee Owens Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Beth Hart, Larkin Poe
Tell me more:
On her outstanding new album Nowhere to Hide, Canadian soul/blues singer Ollee Owens taps into the day-to-day ups and downs of everyday life and sets that palpable tapestry to song. Her real world-focused songcraft is bolstered by her rich soprano that fuses soul, gospel and blues as well as the musical contributions of famed guitarist Will McFarlane on eight of the album's 11 tracks. Produced by Bobby Blazier, a number of studio musicians add magic to the proceedings. The range of material ranges from the nuanced title track and Muscle Shoals-flavored "Some Days" to the emotive blues ballad "Roots," joyful "Love You Better" and soulful "Still in Pieces." The album closes out with a rousing horn section-adorned reading of the 1990 Los Lobos track "The Neighborhood" and stirring version of Bob Dylan's "Lord Protect My Child." Information: olleeowens.com.

Artist:
Continental Drifters

Tell me more: For those who haven't yet caught up with the magic of Continental Drifters, White Noise & Lightning: The Best of Continental Drifters is the perfect introduction to the beloved collective. The 11-track LP and 15-track audio CD collection casts an outstanding light on the congregation of musical talents whose members first found fame in the illustrious likes of the Bangles, Dream Syndicate, the dB's, the Cowsills and more. Brilliant songcraft, top-tier musicianship and alluring vocal harmonies are among the key elements of Continental Drifters' signature sound. Among this writer's top cuts is the jangly opener "The Rain Song" co-penned by Susan Cowsill and Vicki Peterson, the propulsive Americana rocker "Mezzanine" featuring Carlo Nuccio, countrified Peter Holsapple-penned "Invisible Boyfriend," shimmering "Get Over It," dreamy "Mixed Messages" and reflective "Drifters." The CD version of the collection features a previously unissued 12-minute live version of "Who We Are, Where We Live." The beautiful LP and audio CD packaging of the Omnivore Recordings release contains new liner notes from Sean Kelly (author of the band biography "White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story." The Armoires

You might like if you enjoy: Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs, Fleetwood Mac, The Sundays
Tell me more: Released on Oct. 11, the Armoires' fourth album Octoberland is an exhilarating listen sure to please fans of top-tier indie rock and power pop. Produced by Michael Simmons (of sparkle*jets u.k. fame), the Armoires — singer-keyboardist Christina Bulbenko, singer-guitarist Rex Broome, drummer John M. Borack and bassist Clifford Ulrich — showcase an inviting sound that blends great musicianship,  sophisticated songcraft and effortless tunefulness that collectively elevate each of the 11 tracks on the disc. The tandem lead and harmony vocals of Bulbenko and Broome are a key element of the Armoires' signature sound. Broken into two parts, Octoberland's strength and momentum shines at every turn. Part One standouts include the psychedelic opener "We Absolutely Mean It," the shimmering new wave-mining "Ridley & Me After The Apocalypse," melodic "Ouroboros Blues (Crow Whisperer)" and Celtic-tinged "Green Hellfire At The 7-11." Part Two highlights include the sumptuous "You Oughta Be Cut In Half," sweeping "Snake Island Thirteen" (the latter "a windswept cry of solidarity with Christina Bulbenko's war-torn ancestral homeland of Ukraine"), and the winning ear candy-drenched closer "Music & Animals." Octoberland is one of the great new studio albums of 2024. Grammy-nominated powerhouse singer-songwriter Beth Hart has announced her new studio album, ‘You Still Got Me’, which will be released on 25 October via Provogue / Mascot Label Group. The album features appearances by Eric Gales and Guns ‘n Roses’ Slash. She has also revealed her new song, “Wonderful World.” Listen to the new song here.

If you have ever seen Beth Hart live or immersed yourself in her music, you know she puts every ounce of her being into her songs. Firebrands inspire; it's what attracts people to them. However, part of those personalities' makeup is that they do not wear a harness. They thrive on the freedom and space around them. But, with that comes danger; you need an emotional crash mat, and those save lives. It is something we all need at times throughout our lives.
Watch the official lyric video for "Wonderful World" by Beth Hart
The album's video for the title track "You Still Got Me," poignantly features  her beloved husband, Scott.  Scott, along with the team around her, provide that surface to fall on when she needs it. Night after night on tour you can see the adulation she receives and that she also gives back. That connection has been forged over the last 28 years of releasing music in which she unapologetically wears her heart on her sleeve - like a warrior. Which is precisely what she is.

Today she reveals the beautiful piano ballad “Wonderful World,” which oozes optimism. "That song was written for and about my beautiful niece,” she says. “As time has gone by, I see that it’s really written for the lineage of the women in my family. All the way down the line; my great grandma, my grandma, my mom, my sisters, my niece and her daughter. So it's the lineage and how imperative it is for me to see that, and what a gift to finally see that."

Beth says about her writing process, "It's always for the joy of writing or for the challenge of writing, to seek what's going on. Sometimes, when I'm sad or scared, I check in on the piano. Sometimes a song comes, and sometimes one doesn't. Either way, there's comfort there."

The album erupts with soaring rocker 'Savior With A Razor' featuring Guns n' Roses' Slash. The epic Bond-like anthem thunders with nihilistic defiance as Beth's vocals take the listener through the shadows and smash through the ceiling as Slash's guitar wraps around the story in an electric fashion. "Beth Hart is one of my favorite artists to work with,” Slash says. “She is an incredible singer/lyricist on so many levels. But Beth is also as sincere and genuine a friend as they come. She's amazing."

Beth explains the messaging within the songs: "I leave that up to the listener to decide. Personally, I know what it is for right now. One of the beautiful things I love about songs and albums is that over time, that meaning changes. I like to keep that open because there's a lot I can learn from it."

"Little Heartbreak Girl" pierces through the clouds like spears of hope and power. "Little Heartbreak Girl, you're on your own," she yearns but follows with  "Little heartbreak girl, stronger than stone". Still, it's the lyric "You're gonna conquer the world" scattered throughout that stands atop the mountain, planting a flag into the ground.

The decadent groove-laden funk of "Suga N My Bowl" features the Southpaw wizard and longtime friend Eric Gales.  She offers up a cautionary tale on "Never Underestimate a Gal," while the Tom's Waits-esque "Drunk on Valentine" is a tender, Jazzy, smokey barroom ballad. Her "most personal and powerful song on the album" is the haunting socio-political opus "Don't Call The Police," an incredibly raw, upsetting, and observational insight on the George Floyd murder.

'You Still Got Me' is Hart's eleventh studio album, and it finds her riding a career trajectory that has been heading for the stars for several years and keeps soaring. Her most recent albums, 'A Tribute To Led Zeppelin' (2022) and 'War In My Mind' (2019), became her highest charting UK and US releases to date, along with crashing into the Top 10 in Germany, France. Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Austria, and The Netherlands. Selling out shows worldwide, her recent travels have taken her across the US, Canada, Europe, and all the way to India, Morocco, and Australia.

We all have our "Me" when she sings "You still got me" - a loved one, a friend, a pet, a place, a memory, a song…even in her moments of fragility, Beth Hart continues to inspire. She buries her hand deep and tears her emotions open so we can all see a mirror into ourselves, reminding us that you can feel low, but your inner strength is so much more powerful.

Beth Hart is a powerhouse in every sense of the word, and ...she is a gargantuan BADASS!

2.    Suga N My Bowl (feat. Eric Gales)
3.    Never Underestimate A Gal

New music: Walter Trout, Lenny Williams, Raspberries

In this column I feature the latest album from modern blues-rock great Walter Trout, an important reissue from soul singer Lenny Williams and revisit an essential Raspberries title.

Artist:
 Walter Trout
Title: Broken (Provogue Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Joe Bonamassa, Paul Rodgers, Beth Hart
Tell me more: Over the past few years a myriad of domestic and international challenges ranging from inflation, economic uncertainty and increasing violent crime at home to raging wars in Europe and the Middle East as well as rising tension between the U.S. and China bring a sobering reality to life in 2024. In Walter Trout's poignant liner notes on his new album Broken the blues great notes despite the darkness of modern life there is still hope. "These days it seems easy to get discouraged. It's easy to feel powerless. It's easy to feel broken," Trout writes, in part. "I still believe that music is a powerful force that can bring people together." Indeed, there is a life-affirming power across Broken that celebrates the power of the human spirit delivered via dynamic blues rock from one of the genre's greatest-ever proponents. The 12 songs on the Eric Corne-produced album resonate with an energy and urgency that taps into blues and classic rock with an authenticity sure to thrill discerning music lovers. From the heartfelt opener "Broken" featuring guest vocals from Beth Hart and the rootsy "Turn and Walk Away" (the latter featuring Trout's great harmonica work), to the nostalgia-filled "No Magic (On The Street), nuanced instrumental "Love Of My Life" and riveting closer "Falls Apart," the album is rife with highlights. This writer's favorite track is the bewitching "Talkin' To Myself," the song's mesmerizing grace enhanced by Trout's reflective lyrics and strengths as singer, guitarist and electric sitar player. Information: Waltertrout.com.

Artist:
 Lenny Williams
Title: Chill (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: James Ingram, Peabo Bryson, Tower of Power
Tell me more: Available on audio CD for the first time in 30 years, singer-songwriter Lenny WilliamsChill proves to be a timeless listen. The one-time Tower of Power singer and lead vocalist on Kenny G's 1986 hit "Don't Make Me Wait For Love" was in full command of his incredible powers as a vocalist when he recorded Chill in 1994. Armed with a wonderfully soulful voice, Williams delivers a mix of enticing originals and artful covers on the 12-track disc. Among the notable tracks on the collection are the dance-minded "Baby, You Caught Me Eye," the tender ballad "Driftin', a grooving cover of the McFadden & Whitehead signature track "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," and lovely "Has Anybody Seen My Heart." Williams' artistic reading of the Daryl Hall & John Oates 1975 hit single "Sara Smile" is a delight. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist:
 Raspberries
Title: Live on Sunset Strip (Rykodisc)
You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, Eric Carmen, Raspberries, Matthew Sweet
Tell me more: With the death of beloved singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Eric Carmen earlier this month, the music world understandably began to revisit and reassess his outstanding work recorded with the groundbreaking 1970s power pop quartet Raspberries and as a solo artist. Now is the perfect time to celebrate Carmen's work via the wonderful Raspberries concert recording Live on Sunset Strip, a 2007 three-disc title that features a complete 21-track live set captured at the House Of Blues, Los Angeles during the quartet's reunion tour in 2005. The Raspberries original lineup of Carmen, guitarist Wally Bryson, drummer Jim Bonfanti and bassist Dave Smalley are all in top form across the unlikely return. Among the incredible tracks on the marathon-length live set are the earworm opener "I Wanna Be With You," killer cover of The Who's "I Can't Explain," rocking "Tonight," wistful folk rock nuggets "Should I Wait" and "Come Around And See Me," ambitious "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)," and crunchy aptly-titled "I'm A Rocker." The band closes with their soaring anthem "Go All The Way," one of this writer's all-time favorite rock songs (the track gained renewed attention when it was featured in the 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy"). The title includes a bonus DVD with the filmed performances of five of the key tracks featured on the audio recording. Information: amazon.com.

Blues-Rock’s Resilient Icon Walter Trout To Release New Studio Album

Great news on as Friday! Celebrated blues great Walter Trout has just announced the release of "Broken"...Robert Kinsler

Blues-Rock’s Resilient Icon Walter Trout To Release New Studio Album

His incredibly creative and prolific streak continues with 'Broken,' featuring guest appearances from Beth Hart, Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider, and Harmonica Virtuoso Will Wilde.

For the last half-century, however rocky his path, hope and resilience has always lit the way. The beat of Walter Trout's unbelievable story are well-known: the traumatic childhood in Ocean City, New Jersey; the audacious move to the West Coast in '74; the auspicious but chaotic sideman shifts with John Lee Hooker and Big Mama Thornton; the raging addictions that somehow never stopped the boogie when he was with Canned Heat in the early-'80s.

Even now, some will point to Trout's mid-'80s guitar pyrotechnics in the lineup of John Mayall's legendary Bluesbreakers as his career high point. But for a far greater majority of fans, the blood, heart and soul of his solo career since 1989 is the main event, the bluesman's songcraft always reaching for some greater truth, forever surging forward, never shrinking back.

Watch the official lyric video for "Bleed" by Walter Trout

It's a peerless creative streak underlined by the guitarist's regular triumphs at ceremonies, including the Blues Music Awards, SENA European Guitar Awards, British Blues Awards and Blues Blast Music Awards. The iconic British DJ 'Whispering' Bob Harris spoke for millions when he declared Trout "the world's greatest rock guitarist" in his 2001 autobiography, The Whispering Years.

If he were a less questing artist, Trout could mark time and dine out on those past glories, leaving the polemics and calls-to-arms to a younger generation. But that's not enough, considers the still-hungry veteran. "I have to grow. I want to be a vital contributing artist. I feel young. I know I'm not. But in my head, I'm still 25, wanting to get better and do something I haven't done before. I have more to say."

The album was recorded at Kingsize Soundlabs in LA with producer Eric Corne.  "This is our 15th album together," calculates the bluesman. "Eric and I just have a way of working, man. A friend who came into the studio and watched us and said, 'Man, you guys are like a machine'. It's unspoken."

A few collaborators joined Trout for the first time. "I thought my friend Beth Hart could relate to the title track, Broken," he says of the warrior princess whose fiery vocals coil with his own. "Dee Snider from Twisted Sister put up a live cut of me on his Twitter and said: 'Listen to this fucking guitar hero'. We started talking and became friends. He came into the studio, and I knew I had to write him a song. Bleed came about when we were pretty much done. My drummer Michael Leasure said to me, 'Hey, Walter, you played with John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat, this is your 31st album and you've never played a boogie. What's the deal?' So I said, 'OK, fuck it, let's do a boogie'. I can kinda play harmonica, but I thought, 'Let's elevate this thing'. There's a young harmonica player in England who's the best I've ever heard, Will Wilde. He has the soul and the power of Paul Butterfield but couples that with blinding virtuoso technique."

Elsewhere, the wistful Talkin' To Myself, Trout took inspiration from the hits that crackled from AM radio in his youth, and no words were required for the tender instrumental "Love Of My Life" ("Of course, it's about Marie").

With gallows humour, Trout notes that his new album opens with a track called "Broken" and ends with one called "Falls Apart." He can't deny the link between the personal and the socio-political mood in the air, and as such, between those two bookends lie some of the most raw and bruised songs of his career. Still hope leads the way with the notion that music can help us overcome brokenness - one note at a time.

'Broken' by Walter Trout
1. Broken (feat. Beth Hart)
2. Turn And Walk Away
3. Courage In The Dark
4. Bleed (feat. Will Wilde on Harmonica)
5. Talkin' To Myself
6. No Magic ( in the street )
7. I've Had Enough (feat. Dee Snider)
8. Love Of My Life
9. Breathe - written by Richard Gerstein

Reviews: Vinyl Box Set, New Albums

A trio of outstanding collections are available now, including a newly-issued vinyl box set featuring The Zombies and new albums from Eric Gales and Nick Waterhouse.

Artist: The Zombies
Title: The Complete Studio Recordings (Varèse Sarabande Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Zombies, the Hollies
Tell me more: With The Zombies set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this month, there is no time better than the present to grab a copy of a special box set that features both U.S. studio albums, two great compilations as well as a bonus collection of rare singles and United Kingdom-only album tracks. The Complete Studio Recordings features five LPs on 180 gram vinyl and proves to be the most comprehensive vinyl collection of The Zombies' '60s recordings ever gathered together. The packaging is as beautiful as the sound and all five albums are housed in a box to help protect and treasure this amazing set. As for songs, casual rock fans will immediately appreciate the sound of timeless hits such "She's Not There," "Tell Her No" and "Time of the Season," while discerning fans will be immersed in each and every of the 60+ cuts. The blend of R&B, jazz and rock celebrated in sophisticated and groundbreaking recordings that made the British quintet so original from their formation in the early '60s is fully on display via this incredible collection. Information: VareseSarabande.com.

Artist: Eric Gales
Title: The Bookends (Mascot Label Group)
You might like if you enjoy: Gary Clark Jr., Doyle Bramhall II, Beth Hart, Gary Clark Jr.
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/guitar virtuoso Eric Gales' latest album The Bookends will appeal to fans of blues-rock, jaw-dropping guitar work and top-tier songcraft. The Memphis, Tennessee native's 11-track disc boasts a number of style-rich moodscapes. "Something's Gotta Give" (featuring guest B. Slade) features a breezy intro with acoustic guitar forming the backdrop before the song excels via a soulful-pop funk run. The tender R&B-flavored "Southpaw Serenade (with guest Doyle Bramhall II) builds to an explosive finale; the powerful "Reaching For A Change" is a riff-rock blues-rock blaster with introspective lyrics that speak of life's uncertain journey and the quest to beat the hard times and fight the pain. Gales also revisits one of the Beatles' great originals, with his reworking of "With A Little Help From My Friends" matching his strong baritone with the emotive soprano of Beth Hart. The Bookends is a masterful album from start to finish. Information: MascotLabelGroup.com.

Artist: Nick Waterhouse
Title: Nick Waterhouse (Innovative Leisure)
You might like if you enjoy: JD McPherson, Dean Martin
Tell me more: Retro sounds of the mid-1950s are everywhere on the self-titled album from Nick Waterhouse. A listen through the 11-track LP is a trip to a bygone era even while the music surges with the energy and feel of a modern-day release. The disc has a super cool vibe as evidenced by the '60s-mining R&B of "By Heart" and "I Feel An Urge Coming On," rockabilly-meets-garage rock of "Song For Winners," and Rhythm 'n' Blues of "Black Glass." The swinging "Wreck The Rod" is another standout, complete with blasting horns, the pounding piano and Waterhouse's wonderful baritone growl. Information: NickWaterhouse.com.

“There’s a difference between playing music and being music. Jeff IS music”
- Jennifer Batten

New York, NY (April 5, 2018)– Still On The Run: The Jeff Beck Story documents the history of a musical maverick and true innovator, delving below the surface to shed light on the circumstances, inspiration and technicality behind the man and his music. The film features extensive interviews with Jeff both at home and in his workshop, as well as interviews with Jimmy PageEric ClaptonRod StewartDavid GilmourRonnie WoodSlashJan HammerJoe PerryBeth Hart & many more.
Beck’s childhood saw him surrounded by music; from the endlessly playing radio, to his homemade guitar and the countless hours he spent poring over records and playing music with his friend, Jimmy Page. “I didn’t have to think about taking up guitar, I just wanted to pour my feelings into it” said Jeff. Around the same time his love of classic cars was ignited from watching American B-movies featuring hot rods, and his two great passions in life were born.
At that time, visiting America seemed like an impossible dream for the young man from Surrey, but joining the Yardbirds spawned Beck’s first trip Stateside. A paycheck from the 1968 film, Blow Up saw him to splash out on a split window ’68 Corvette - a warm memory that clearly still delights him to this day.
Covering the Jeff Beck Group’s seminal 1968 Truth album featuring Rod Stewartand Ronnie Wood right through to Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop album (1989) - from experimental rock departures to powerfully dirty, heavy grooves and everything in between, Jeff will always create a singularly unique guitar sound.
Still On The Run: The Jeff Beck Story reveals the true story of the guitar player who builds hot rods and captures the excitement and anecdotes of those who have worked alongside him. Jeff Beck has always been a risk taker, on an endless quest for fresh and challenging new sounds. Bending notes and filtering a myriad of musical inspirations, he will continue to inspire fans and musicians alike by giving voice to his guitar in the most unexpected ways.
In other Jeff Beck news, his acclaimed Live At The Hollywood Bowl performance, released last year on multiple video and audio formats, will be available for the first time as a standalone 2-CD set and as a 180-gram 2-LP set on April 6 and May 25, respectively, from Rhino.
Additionally, this summer, Jeff Beck will be joined by Paul Rodgers and Ann Wilson of Heart on the “Stars Align Tour." The outing kicks off July 18 through August 26th with several Jeff Beck headlining dates as well. Check http://jeffbeck.com for the full itinerary and ticket information.
Jeff Beck is a 8 time Grammy Award winner, featured in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and recipient of the British Academy’s Ivor Norvello Award. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - twice.
