Styx to return to Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, Arizona
In November 2024 I caught Styx (seen above at that show) perform a thrilling performance at Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, AZ (read my review of that concert HERE). The good news for fans of the band who live in Central and Northern Arizona is a just-announced return by Styx to the venue on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026. The band's 100-minute concert was a must-see event for yours truly and I really recommend music lovers catch the band at an upcoming date. You can see all of the band's upcoming concert dates HERE.

About Styx
Creating and recording new music is often considered the lifeblood of any band — an ethos AOR torchbearers STYX continue to embody with the highly anticipated release of CIRCLING FROM ABOVE, the 18th studio album in their formidable catalog via the band’s label, Alpha Dog 2T/UMe. Spanning 13 tracks, the album navigates the complexities of the human experience through the intersecting lenses of technology and nature. CIRCLING FROM ABOVE –hailed by critics as their third “masterpiece” album in a row, following 2021’s CRASH OF THE CROWN and 2017’s THE MISSION--features contributions from all seven members of the band, including founding guitarist/vocalist James “JY” Young (affectionately known as “The Godfather of Styx”), guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw, original bassist Chuck Panozzo, longtime drummer Todd Sucherman, keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan, guitarist/vocalist Will Evankovich and bassist Terry Gowan.

The seven men comprising STYX have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. They draw from over five decades of barn burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the seething indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound.

New music: Walter Trout, Colin James, Johnny Marr

In this column I feature new audio releases featuring blues-rock greats Walter Trout and Colin James as well as a concert recording from Johnny Marr.

Artist:
 Walter Trout
Title: Sign of the Times (Provogue)
You might like if you enjoy: Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout
Tell me more: Acclaimed singer-songwriter/guitar virtuoso Walter Trout is back with his latest studio album, the forceful Sign of the Times
. Although Trout is 74, the Southern California-based legend's signature vocals and fiery guitar work are as strong as ever. The artist has plenty to say lyrically, as evidenced by the introspective mid tempo sortie "I Remember," scorching Chicago blues original "Blood on my Pillow" showcasing his expressively stellar fret work, the heavy "Struggle To Believe," in sync with an increasingly crazy world, the timely "Hightech Woman" that playfully looks at the ever-increasing pace of technology. Other highlights include the confessional classic rock-mining "Hurt No More," the love-gone-bad blues foray "Too Bad" and beautiful country-tinged acoustic ballad "Mona Lisa Smile." Information: waltertrout.com.

Artist:
 Colin James
Title: Chasing the Sun (Stony Plain Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Charlie Musselwhite, Lucinda Williams, Nils Lofgren, Colin Linden
Tell me more: In a perfect world the lead-off track ("Perfection") from Colin James' 21st and latest album Chasing the Sun would be all over radio and streaming services. An infectious blues-rock track where James and Americana songstress Lucinda Williams share lead vocals, "Perfection" is one of the best new cuts of 2025. And that alluring cut is just one of the great songs on Chasing the Sun, an 11-track album that celebrates James' talents as singer, guitarist and songwriter. Other standouts on the disc include the gospel-tinged "I'm Still Alive," buoyant blues romp "Devilment" (the latter featuring harmonica great Charlie Musselwhite), the soulful "How It Feels To Be Loved" and "Too Far Gone," the bewitching roots gem "Star Studded Sky," haunting "Open Your Mind" and John Hammond-penned acoustic blues foray "Come To Find Out"  the latter showcasing the instrumental talents of James, Hammond and electric guitarist Colin Linden
. Information: colinjames.com.

Artist:
 Johnny Marr
Title: Look Out Live! (BMG)
You might like if you enjoy: The Smiths, Johnny Marr
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/groundbreaking guitarist Johnny Marr is out today with a terrific two-disc concert recording that fully captures the power and energy of his live appearances. On the 22-track title — recorded at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on the final date of his 2024 Spirit Power tour  Marr revisits some of his beloved material recorded when he was with '80s greats The Smiths as well as his brilliant solo work. Highlights include the captivating opener "Sensory Street," the propulsive "Generate! Generate!" and "Armatopia," the sweeping "Walk Into The Sea" and infectious "Easy Money." Marr delivers energetic and faithful takes on The Smiths' "Panic," "This Charming Man," "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want," "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and more. The concert was elevated by the appearance of Neil Tennant who reunited with Marr to perform '90s supergroup Electronic's hit "Getting Away With It" as well as a cover of David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel." U2 named 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize honorees

Congratulations to U2 on being named this year's Woody Guthrie Prize honorees. Below is the official media release...Robert Kinsler

U2 NAMED 2025 WOODY GUTHRIE PRIZE HONOREES

The groundbreaking Irish band, known for its passionate commitment to justice and equality, will be presented with the award October 21 at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa.

September 18, 2025Bono and The Edge will accept the 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize on behalf of U2 on October 21 in Tulsa at Cain’s Ballroom.
This prestigious award annually recognizes a recipient who embodies the spirit of Woody Guthrie's social consciousness and musical legacy. In their art and in their actions, U2 band members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. continue a tradition of using music as a force for social change, echoing Guthrie’s belief that songs can help make the world a fairer place.
Bono and The Edge will return to Cain’s Ballroom - for the first time since U2’s 1981 show on the U.S. leg of The Boy Tour - to accept the award and participate in an onstage conversation about the band’s music. They look forward to legally buying their own pints this time around.
“U2 embodies the mission of the Woody Guthrie Prize, using music to confront injustice and inspire action,” states Cady Shaw, Senior Director, Woody Guthrie Center“By presenting the 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize to U2, we honor a legacy of music that continues to challenge who we are and connect us the world over.”
Formed in Dublin in 1976, U2 has built a career rooted in songs and music that celebrate the same ideals Woody Guthrie sang for: love, hope, justice, equity and the dignity of every person; from early works like ‘War’ and ‘Pride (In the Name of Love)’ — a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — to enduring anthems such as ‘One’ and ‘Walk On.’
The recipients of Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award, which recognizes individuals and groups who have promoted and enhanced the cause of human rights, the four U2 band members have long used their platform as artists to highlight social issues and effect change. From their support of organizations such as (RED) and The ONE Campaign (both co-founded by Bono) and Music Rising (co-founded by The Edge) among many others, to the co-funding of Music Generation, Ireland’s National Music Education Programme which transforms the lives of children and young people through access to high quality subsidized performance music education.
The fundraising evening will also feature remarks from center director, Cady Shaw, and Woody Guthrie's granddaughter, Anna Canoni, who will share her family’s appreciation of U2 as the standard bearers of Woody’s legacy. U2 will join past recipients Pete Seeger (2014), Mavis Staples (2015), Kris Kristofferson (2016), Norman Lear (2017), John Mellencamp (2018), Chuck D (2019), Joan Baez (2020), Bruce Springsteen (2021), Pussy Riot (2023) and Tom Morello (2024).
A limited number of experience packages will be available for sponsors and members of the Woody Guthrie Center.
The 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize is presented by the Harper House Music Foundation.

About U2
Formed in Dublin in 1976, U2 have toured the globe countless times, released 15 studio albums, sold over 170 million albums and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammys and Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award.
Acknowledged as one of the best live acts in the world, U2 have consistently pushed the boundaries of live performance, with ground-breaking stage shows that embrace the latest in technology and innovation most recently with ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere’ which lit up Las Vegas for an acclaimed 40-date run to launch the world’s most state-of-the-art venue, Sphere.

New music: Brenda Lee documentary, Young the Giant, The Turtles

In this column I feature new music releases featuring Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist Brenda Lee, modern rock outfit Young the Giant and classic rock favorites The Turtles.

Artist:
 Brenda Lee
Title: Rockin' Around: The Story Behind The Iconic Singer (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Jackie DeShannon, Wanda Jackson, Brenda Lee
Tell me more: Brenda Lee is a groundbreaking American singer who has achieved fame in a number of musical genres including rockabilly, pop, country and Christmas music; the American artist scored her first Billboard hit in 1957 when she was only 12 and has sold more than 100 million records globally. The Atlanta, Georgia native's holiday favorite "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (recorded in 1958) topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 2023, making Lee the oldest artist ever to top the chart. Now 80,
Lee's incredible genre-defying career is celebrated via an insightful documentary titled "Rockin' Around: The Story Behind The Iconic Singer" that is available via a terrific Mercury Studios Blu-ray + DVD release.

In addition to archival footage of the artist performing in the 1950s, '60s, '70s and '80s, there are modern-day interviews with Lee as well as Keith Urban, Tanya Tucker, Trisha Yearwood, Jackie DeShannonPat Benatar, Neil Giraldo and radio personality Shotgun Tom Kelly discussing Lee's amazing career. The documentary provides a look at the myriad of challenges she has faced throughout her life, as well as her successes (Lee was Billboard's Top Female Artist of the Decade in the 1960s). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, Lee's parade of classic hits includes "Sweet Nothin's," "I'm Sorry," "I Want to Be Wanted," "Speak to Me Pretty," "Losing You" and "All Alone Am I." There is also plenty of time dedicated to the success of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and that song's extraordinary road to iconic status. Information: mercurystudios.co.

Artist: Young the Giant
Title: In The Open Volume One (Jungle Youth Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: TBA
Tell me more: Young the Giant has just released a new acoustic EP, In The Open Volume One, featuring stripped back versions of some of the band's most beloved material including the confessional "Mind Over Matter" and bewitching "Apartment." The EP kicks off with the previously-unreleased original track "Bitter Fruit," a new acoustic-flavored gem that looks at the painful end of a relationship and the hope for a better future. Other standouts on the EP include the heartfelt "Amerika" and the introspective "Heat of the Summer." In addition to top-tier singer Sameer Gadhia, Young the Giant features Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), Francois Comtois (drums) and Payam Doostzadeh (bass). Young the Giant will headline in Costa Mesa, CA tonight, Sept. 12 as part of
their current In The Open Tour, an intimate concert experience performed in beautiful spaces and venues around the country; opening the show will be Cassandra Coleman (debut album produced by Jack Antonoff). Information: youngthegiant.com.

Artist:
The Turtles
Title: All the Singles (Manifesto Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Turtles, the Hollies, the Kinks
Tell me more: With the tragic passing of Turtles lead vocalist/guitarist Mark Volman widely reported on Sept. 5, now is the time to revisit the band's wonderful legacy. Spanning a shimmering cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" released in June 1965 to the sweeping baroque pop nugget "Me About You" released in late 1970, the Turtles' enduring parade of great songs is celebrated across the glorious All the Singles (released in 2016). The two-disc, 48-track collection allows plenty of time to explore the Los Angeles-spawned group's radio hits as well as more experimental material that draws comparisons with the Kinks and the Byrds. With Howard Kaylan and Volman's artful and wonderful harmony vocals leading the way, the material ranges from folk-rock (the Warren Zevon-penned "Like the Seasons"), garage rock ("Almost There," "Outside Chance"), power-pop ("She'd Rather Be With Me," "Elenore"), sunshine pop ("So Goes Love," "On a Summer's Day"), psychedelic ("Sound Asleep") and even country ("Who Would Ever Think That I Would Marry Margaret"). The Turtles' 1967 number 1 hit "Happy Together" remains one of that decade's most enticing songs and has never sounded better thanks to the remastering from Bill Inglot and Dave Schultz showcased across this must-have collection. WINGS arrives in a remarkable variety of formats, including the stunning 3LP Limited Edition Color Vinyl collection, a lovingly curated time capsule of imagery and music for the mega Wings fan, through to the 1CD and 1LP versions for those embarking on their first flights with Wings and/or just beginning a deeper dive into this stage of Paul’s unparalleled career.

The expanded booklet includes extensive album-by-album notes on the artwork written by Po, with additional editorial by Pete Paphides, and features original artwork by Humphrey Ocean – who first worked with Wings on some of the artwork for Wings at the Speed of Sound before being invited by Paul and Linda on tour in 1976 as their artist in residence — rendering behind-the-scenes sketches of the band.

The Blu-ray version of WINGS is the first time Wings songs are available on a physical format in Dolby Atmos.

See a complete list of formats and/or preorder WINGS HERE.

This collection charts the story of a band as it became one of the biggest-selling acts of all time. With US #1 singles including “My Love,” “Band on the Run,” “Listen to What the Man Said,” “Silly Love Songs,” and “With a Little Luck” (featured on all WINGS formats) and over 22 million albums sold around the world, Wings defied expectations. “Mull of Kintyre” became the first single in the UK to sell more than two million copies – overtaking “She Loves You” to become the biggest-selling single of all time in the UK.

At their core Wings were a great rock band, but as WINGS amply demonstrates, they were so much more: The sprawling compilation showcases the band’s versatility with a staggering tracklisting that spans pop, folk, soul, reggae and experimentation with songs like “C Moon,” “Goodnight Tonight,” “Arrow Through Me,” “Wild Life” and more.

Following the breakup of The Beatles, McCartney found himself adrift, having parted ways with his lifelong collaborators and closest friends. He missed the camaraderie, the creative spark that came from being in a band. Faced with the daunting choice of walking away from music or starting over, Wings was born.

Formed in 1971 with his wife Linda McCartney and guitarist Denny Laine, Wings quickly became Paul’s vehicle for both personal healing and artistic rebirth. Over the course of a decade, the band released seven studio albums and charted an ambitious, unpredictable journey that blended musical experimentation with global success. Rather than rely on past glories, Wings forged their own identity, often in the face of critical skepticism and frequent lineup changes. Their story is one of triumph, resilience, and a deep belief in the power of reinvention.
