Sights and Sounds: Laurence Juber, Broods, dada

Going into the long holiday weekend, here is a roundup of some cool music news to share...

Two-time Grammy-winning guitarist-composer Laurence Juber is set to perform two special shows as part of the Lord of the Strings concert series in Orange County, CA. The original dates (March 3 and 4) have now been changed to March 10 for a performance in Dana Point and March 11 in Mission Viejo. Juber originally rose to fame as lead guitarist in Paul McCartney's band Wings, but has since gone on to release two dozen solo albums centered on his virtuoso skills as a fingerstyle guitar master.

Juber's next album LJ Can't Stop Playing The Beatles! will be released by Hologram Recordings on March 3, and it's more than likely that Juber will feature his original arrangements from that album at his Lord of the Strings concert dates.

"I started playing guitar in November of '63, coinciding with the first wave of Beatlemania," Juber said recently. "Their songs are baked into my musical DNA and having played guitar with three of the four Beatles, they form a central thread in my own life experience."

LJ Can't Stop Playing the Beatles! Tracklist:

1.     And Your Bird Can Sing
2.     Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
3.     She Loves You

Coachella-bound Broods have released an acoustic version of their new single "Heartlines" that will allow music fans to get a great introduction to the duo. The beautiful version of "Heartlines" was recorded during Broods' recent 1 Mic, 1 Take session at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, CA.

Broods will make their Coachellafest debut this year, performing on Fridays, April 14 and 21, 2017. In between the festival dates, Broods will open for Empire Of The Sun at the Comerica Theatre in Phoenix on April 18, and at Los Angeles' historic Shrine Exposition Hall on April 19. (Editor's note: Empire Of The Sun is also performing at Coachella on April 14 and April 21).

"Heartlines," which Broods co-wrote with fellow New Zealanders Lorde and Joel Little, is from the band's new album Conscious (Capitol Records), which debuted in the Top 5 of Billboard's Alternative Albums. The single was added by more than 20 stations in its first two weeks at Hot AC radio and has upwards of 14 million streams worldwide.

Just a last-minute reminder that dada is performing two much-anticipated dates in Southern California this weekend. You can catch the band tonight (Friday, Feb. 17) at The Rose in Pasadena. You can see the acclaimed rock trio at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday night, Feb. 18.

Here is the full press release on the return of dada:

LOS ANGELES BAND DADA CELEBRATE 25TH ANNIVERSARY BY HITTING THE ROAD ON THE “DADA FOREVER TOUR”

dada features, from left, Joie Calio, Phil Leavitt and Michael Gurley.
Two decades after the Los Angeles outfit dada embarked on its original journey, singer-guitarist Michael Gurley, singer-bassist Joie Calio and drummer Phil Leavitt are celebrating the band’s 25th anniversary and hitting the road on the “dada Forever Tour.”

dada is about digging into our roots, examining and celebrating it.”  Says Calio

Since the release of their groundbreaking 1992 debut Puzzle, the trio has created an array of songs boasting progressive rock musicianship, dazzling vocal harmonies and melodic power pop layered with a hint of psychedelic rock. Adding to the trio’s groundbreaking line of attack are the marathon-length shows that deliver on the promise that every performance is the only one of its kind.

Puzzle was released on September 8, 1992, and it didn’t take long for the band’s sonic imprint to find an audience. The album’s first single “Dizz Knee Land” found widespread airplay on alternative and mainstream rock outlets cracking the Top 5 on the Modern Rock Single's chart and pushing the album's sales to over 1,000,000 worldwide. The success of Puzzle was followed in 1994 by American Highway Flower, featuring the ambitious “Ask the Dust” and astounding “Feet to the Sun,” dada has gone on to create a magnificent discography featuring a half-dozen full-length albums and an EP. The trio has also issued a number of solo efforts and offshoot projects along the way exploring a range of styles including folk, blues, jazz and rock. Gurley and Leavitt were both members of Butterfly Jones while dada was on hiatus in the early ‘00s; Calio has released several solo discs and with X Levitation Cult.  Mike Gurley and the Nightcaps are a popular jazz group in Southern California. Additionally, Leavitt has stepped out from behind the drum set as lead singer and Calio is playing guitar in 7HorseThe duo’s new album Livin’ in a Bitch of a World features thrilling tales of grifters, gun owners and drug runners, as powerful as any in hardboiled fiction, and punctuated perfectly by doomy drumming, vicious strumming and lacerating slide-guitar playing. ”Raw and raunchy, soulful and edgy – 7Horse avoids the pitfalls of garage rockers like Black Keys and White Stripes by ensuring the melodies rise above ‘genre’ trappings. Hooks galore never obfuscate the duo’s down and dirty rootsy agenda though.” – Power of PopHear the album here:http://7horsemusic.com/7hm4i/
