The Rolling Stones thrill in long-awaited return to the Valley of the Sun
From left, The Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood, drummer Charlie Watts, singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. |
That doesn't mean rock music lovers take the existence of one of the planet's greatest ever rock 'n' roll bands for granted.
Earlier this year the group's "No Filter Tour" was postponed when singer Mick Jagger, 76, had to undergo a heart valve replacement procedure. That was the latest in a long series of bona fide challenges dating back to the death of original guitarist/founding member Brian Jones in July 1969. Indeed, the band's original keyboardist Ian Stewart had a heart attack and died in December 1985; founding bassist Bill Wyman left the band in 1993 (to be replaced by "unofficial" bassist Daryl Jones), and drummer Charlie Watts was diagnosed with throat cancer (which was treated with radiotherapy and is currently in remission) in June 2004.

To be sure The Rolling Stones (whose official line-up includes Jagger, Watts, and guitarists Keith Richards, guitarist Ronnie Wood) have embarked on frequent tours over the years, this concert at the home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals was the troupe's first performance in the greater Phoenix area in more than a decade. Few would argue the band's commanding and inspired performance was worth the wait.

Following a wonderfully loose performance of "Tumbling Dice," Jagger proclaimed: "It's great to be back in the sun. Who else would come to Arizona in August?"
The Rolling Stones had opened the show minutes earlier with their 1968 hit "Jumpin' Jack Flash." It was the first of 19 classic cuts the band would unleash, each offering a myriad of reasons to celebrate this night.

Here are some of the standout moments from the two-hour performance:
- "Tumbling Dice" offered an early chance for Jagger to journey out onto the floor via a long elevated ramp to sing, dance and spur the crowd to get into the festive atmosphere. The song's triumphant ending celebrated the talents of the band and a talented touring group of singers and musicians.
- While the majority of songs performed in Glendale came from the Stones' '60s and '70s albums, fans of their more recent material were treated to "Sad Sad Sad" from 1989's outstanding Steel Wheels LP. It was a straight-up rocker and featured some of Richards' most rousing and exciting lead guitar work of the night.
- An intimate mini-set featuring Jagger, Richards, Watts and Wood performed out at the end of the ramp positioned on the floor. A countrified blues version of "Sweet Virginia" and rootsy take on "Dead Flowers" were magical.
- A wonderful detour featuring Richards on lead vocals included the acoustic gem "You Got The Silver," with Wood's shining slide work bolstering the track. A decidedly more rocking take on the Some Girls favorite "Before They Make Me Run" followed.
- During the opening moments of "Symphony for the Devil," Jagger came out to stage in a green glitter-adorned jacket complete with tails and a stylish hat and twirled a number of times to the delight of the crowd.
- The Stones only played one disco-flavored track on this night, but it was a great one. The extended take on "Miss You" not only found Jagger playing guitar but singing in a high-flying falsetto that drew resounding cheers from the entire crowd. The classic also found Jones impressing with his cunning skills on the bass guitar.
- It's easy to forget that the Stones were originally rooted in blues. That changed in an instant when the group tore through an incredible version of "Midnite Rambler," complete with Jagger playing some fiery blues harp.
- Few fans left the concert early, so the majority of concertgoers were rewarded with a potent two-song encore including a marathon-length reading of "Gimme Shelter" where Jagger brought singer Sasha Allen out and the two nailed the emotive peaks of the song. Finally, the band closed things out with their most iconic hit, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," elevating a special night to even greater heights.
While there are few guarantees in life, this is one Rolling Stones fan hoping there is at least one more tour in their future.
Editor's Note: The Rolling Stones have rescheduled their final show of the "No Filter Tour" at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami to Friday, August 30, 2019 in the wake of the news about the arrival of Hurricane Dorian.

Chrissie Hynde reveals "No Return," cover of Kinks classic is latest single from forthcoming album
CHRISSIE HYNDE REVEALS "NO RETURN"
COVER OF KINKS CLASSIC LATEST SINGLE FROM NEW ALBUM,
VALVE BONE WOE, OUT SEPTEMBER 6, 2019
Chrissie Hynde released her new song today, "No Return." Written by Ray Davies and appearing on the Kinks' 1967 classic long player Something Else, Hynde's version is taken from her new album Valve Bone Woe, out next Friday, September 6 on BMG. The album will be available on CD, double 180g vinyl and a limited edition 7" box set. Billboard premiered the song earlier today alongside a rare Q&A with Hynde.
Hynde's new album Valve Bone Woe features 14 tracks written by a stunning array of classic songwriters and innovators, including Davies, Brian Wilson, Frank Sinatra, Charles Mingus, Hoagy Carmichael, John Coltrane, Nick Drake and Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Valve Bone Woe was produced by Marius de Vries and recorded with the Valve Bone Woe Ensemble at Air Studios in London.
About the album, Hynde says:
"A few years back when I saw an obit in the paper for the valve-trombonist, Bob Brookmeyer, I mailed my jazz sax-playing brother, saying 'R. I. P. Bob Brookmeyer.' Terry, a man of few words, responded with 'Valve Bone Woe,' a kind of Haiku beatnik prose.
"I thought that was a perfect title for the album I'd been working on with producer Marius de Vries. After we'd recorded 'I Wish You Love' for the Eye Of The Beholder soundtrack I'd often expressed a desire to do more along those lines. What eventually emerged was the idea to do what we refer to as our Jazz/Dub album, the one you're now holding in your hand.
"I'm not hugely interested in branching out into other musical genres, being a devout rock singer as such, but jazz is something I grew up around (thanks to my bro) and I've always had a soft spot for it. I often bemoan what I regard as a decline in melody in popular music and I wanted to sing melodies. Plus, I have a penchant for cover songs, it's the surprise of singing something that I didn't think of writing myself that turns me on.
Jazz got side-lined by Rock & Roll in the 60's, but now the demise of rock seems to be heralding in a newfound interest in it, the most creative and innovative musical forms of the 20th century. I'm happy to jump on the bandwagon."

Artist: Rob Laufer
Title: The Floating World (independent)
You might like if you enjoy: Andrew Gold, Crowded House, George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass"
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Rob Laufer can be forgiven for not having released a full-length album in nine years leading up to his new masterwork The Floating World. An acclaimed producer, musical sideman and songwriter-for-hire, his list of bona fide credits includes working with the illustrious likes of Sir George Martin, Johnny Cash, Cheap Trick, Shawn Colvin and Fiona Apple. Additionally, Laufer serves as music director and band leader for the fabled Wild Honey Orchestra tribute concerts, an on-going Los Angeles-benefit series (this year's tribute to the Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society album included members of The Cars, R.E.M., Blur and Pugwash). The tracks enthrall across the aptly-titled "The Floating World" including the dreamy "Avalanche," luxurious "Highway Machine," magnificent Beatlesque "Floating World," baroque pop ballad "Fence" and inspired "This River." An breathtaking album that resonates more with each listen. Information: www.roblaufermusic.com/.
Artist: Pete Yorn
Title: Caretakers (Shelly Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Jason Falkner, Beck, Big Star
Tell me more: Across Pete Yorn's wonderful new album Caretakers it's clear that the acclaimed singer-songwriter's considerable artistry is on display at every turn. On Yorn's seventh solo full-length effort there are quiet moments of reflection ("Caretakers," "Friends," "Do You Want to Love Again?"), wistful celebration (the folk rocker "I Wanna Be The One," the infectious "POV") and a determined quest to translate this crazy thing we call life into song (the dreamy "Calm Down," the shimmering "Can't Stop You," "Opal") that add up to an outstanding return from Yorn. Information: www.PeteYorn.com.
Artist: Cherie Currie & Brie Darling
Title: The Motivator (Blue Elan Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Joan Jett, Fanny, The Runaways
Tell me more: Cherie Currie and Brie Darling have voices that blend magically across their new full-length collaboration The Motivator. Currie (front woman of the Runaways) and Darling (singer-drummer of Fanny) have unveiled a joyful tribute to many of the songs and artists who influenced them, and in the process sound as if they are having a blast. In addition to three newly-penned originals (including the infectious "This Is Our Time" and confessional blues rocker "Too Bruised"), the disc is filled with artful covers of classics from some of the most groundbreaking artists of the late 1960s and early '70s. The selection of material was likely focused on the strength of songs but it's amazing how powerfully the cuts' lyrics resonate with the world events of 2019. This writer's favorite tracks on the LP include the duo's version of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter," John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth," The Youngbloods' "Get Together," Stephen Stills' stellar "For What It's Worth," and a particularly effective amped-up take on Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground." Artist: Arielle Paul
Title: Burn (Mad Monkey Records)
You might like if you enjoy: First Aid Kit, Jenny Lewis, Grace Potter
Tell me more: It's not easy to blend Americana and pop convincingly but that's exactly what Los Angeles songstress Arielle Paul does on her new EP Burn. Across the disc's six solid tracks she proves to be a talented musical chameleon. The title track finds her providing a fresh coat of sonic paint to contemporary Americana; "This Way" and "Epically In Love" magically blend contemporary pop with authentic sweeps of psychedelia. The acoustic "Sometimes" is a confessional and beautiful foray, her emotive voice showcased amidst a soundscape that artfully builds from start to finish. The uptempo "Go" recalls some of the best work of Grace Potter, a rousing blend of rock, soul and R&B stylings. Information: AriellePaul.com.

Sights and Sounds: Grace Potter, The Who, Billie Eilish, GRAMMY Museum
On October 25, 2019 Grace Potter will release Daylight, her second solo LP and first for Fantasy Records. Daylight arrives after a turbulent, life-altering 4-year hiatus from music that had the acclaimed singer-songwriter contemplating whether she would ever record another album. Cathartic and emotionally raw, Daylight is the result of that arduous journey, the most emotionally revealing, musically daring work of her career. Watch the clip for Daylight's passionate first single "Love Is Love" HERE and pre-order Daylight HERE.
"I've always aimed to write songs from a universal perspective; so that anyone who heard my music could relate, but that actually made it harder for me to take ownership of my own perspective. These songs were written so I could process - and be accountable for - my own life experience," Potter says. "I had just pulled the ripcord on my whole life. It was an incredibly jarring, private experience. When the dust settled a bit, the last thing I wanted to do was tell the whole world about it through song. It was a very gradual process of re-framing music and its purpose in my life. So, when I finally started writing songs again - it had to be for myself and myself alone."
Produced by her husband Eric Valentine, Daylight took shape in the Topanga Canyon home they'd recently settled into. Unsigned and entirely free of any pressure to appease, Potter slowly carved out ideas and the two began laying down tracks. Moving to Valentine's Hollywood studio, Barefoot Recording, the songs came to life with the help of longtime Potter collaborators including guitarist Benny Yurco and drummer Matt Musty, friends Benmont Tench and Larry Goldings on keys and supreme vocalists, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of the indie band Lucius.
On the powerful album-opener and first single "Love Is Love," Potter fully surrenders as her voice shifts from fragile to soaring. It was the first track written for Daylight and she found the process so unsettling, it temporarily put her off from attempting any further self-examination in song. "'Love Is Love' is so confessional, it was terrifying. After we recorded the demo, I had no desire to keep on writing because the feelings were still too raw," she says. "I was scared to dig any deeper."
Throughout Daylight, Potter imbues her songs with equal parts aching vulnerability and unapologetic self-possession. In many ways, the stark piano balled "Release" is the album's centerpiece. Sorrowful but redemptive, its resolution lies in a lyric by co-writer Mike Busbee ("I hope that someday/The sun will shine again/And you'll release me too").
While much of the new album mirrors the emotional chaos of her recent past, Daylightalso channels a soulful wonder on songs like "Every Heartbeat," an acoustic-guitar-laced serenade for Valentine and their infant son, Sagan. And on "Desire," Daylight drifts into an impulsively playful mood, serving up a sweet celebration of unabashed lust.
Described by Spin as "one of the greatest living voices in rock today," Grace Potter has not only played every major music festival from Coachella and Lollapalooza to Bonnaroo and Rock in Rio, she's created her own thriving music festival, Burlington's Grand Point North. Additionally, she's shared a stage with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, the Allman Brothers, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, and The Roots to name just a few. Potter has also collaborated with the Flaming Lips for a Tim Burton film, written and produced music for film and TV and recorded two GRAMMY-nominated, multiplatinum singles with her friend Kenny Chesney.
Having endured a painful divorce and the breakup of her band- as well as far more joyful events like a new marriage and the birth of her first child, Grace Potter reached for Daylight and delivered a commanding statement of power and purpose.

ABOUT THE WHO
The Who are one of the top three greatest rock legacies in music history. Their music provoked explosive change and spanned what many critics declare is rock’s most elastic creative spectrum, with Pete Townshend’s songwriting moving between raw, prosaic, conceptual, and expressively literate. Their visionary sense of stagecraft headed by Roger Daltrey’s soaring vocal prowess is topped off by the band’s blistering rhythm section. With both Roger and Pete delivering their own
memoirs in recent years (Pete’s Who I Am was released to much acclaim in 2012, and Roger’s autobiography, Thanks A Lot Mr. Kibblewhite; My Story, was embraced by critics in 2018) it’s
fitting that the two remaining WHO members have shared their incredible legacy in literary fashion, for few bands have had a more lasting impact on the rock era and the reverberating pop culture than The Who.

BILLIE EILISH TOPS BILLBOARD HOT 100 WITH ‘BAD GUY’
FIRST ARTIST BORN THIS MILLENNIUM TO REACH NUMBER 1
CONTINUES TO SHATTER THE CEILING WITH RECORD-BREAKING DEBUT ALBUM
17-year-old Billie Eilish has earned her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week with her latest single ‘bad guy,’ taken from her multi-platinum global smash debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? [Darkroom/Interscope Records]. Following an unprecedented total of 9 weeks at No. 2, ‘bad guy’ has knocked Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ featuring Billy Ray-Cyrus off the top spot this week.
Billie Eilish is officially the first artist born this millennium to achieve both a No. 1 album and single, and is now the third female solo artist in the 31-year history with multiple songs topping the Billboard Alternative Songs airplay chart (alongside Alanis Morissette and Sinead O’Connor). "bad guy" also sits atop the Pop Songs airplay chart for a second week running after leading the Alternative Songs airplay, and is the first Alternative Songs No. 1 to top the Hot 100 since Lorde's "Royals."
Her album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? -- released on March 29 [Darkroom/Interscope Records] -- debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 album chart and has since returned to the top spot two additional times this year.
Recently, Billie Eilish graced the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, and most recently V Magazine for their 20th Anniversary issue, and has amassed more that 15-billion combined global streams to date. Showing no signs of slowing down, the Los Angeles native is currently on her sold-out WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WORLD TOUR.
