Paul Simon leads off new season of 'Austin City Limits'

Wow! What a lineup for the new season of 'Austin City Limits." Can't wait. Here is the official media release...

Rare Hour With Superstar In His ACL Debut

Season 42 premieres October 1, 2016 on PBS

Paul Simon performing on the season premiere of 'Austin City Limits'
Austin, Texas—September 29, 2016—Austin City Limits (ACL) launches a new season of must-see performances from music’s finest with an icon of American popular music, Paul Simon, in his first-ever appearance on the ACL stage.  The living legend shines in a sublime, career-spanning hour featuring beloved classics and new songs from his acclaimed recent album, Stranger to Stranger.  The hour-long season premiere airs Saturday, October 1 at 8pm CT/9pm ET as part of ACL’s new Season 42.  The program airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for times) and full episodes are made available online for a limited time at pbs.org/austincitylimits immediately following the initial broadcast. Viewers can visit acltv.com for news regarding future tapings, episode schedules and select live stream updates. The show's official hashtag is #acltv.

Making a rare television appearance, Simon sparkles in an irresistible performance filled with career highlights from his over five-decade strong musical legacy.  Backed by a world-class nine-piece band, the music legend opens an eleven-song set with selections from Graceland, his landmark 1986 album that brought African rhythms to mainstream American radio.  A lifelong sonic adventurer, Simon takes viewers to Louisiana Cajun country for a joyful performance of “That Was Your Mother.”  Simon also showcases new classics from 2016’s acclaimed Stranger to Stranger, his 13th solo album, including standouts “Wristband” and “The Werewolf.” Simon’s showmanship is on full display throughout as he dazzles the ACL audience with non-stop gems from his extensive catalog, including early solo hit “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” and a stripped-down, countrified “Homeward Bound.”  He dips back into his Graceland songbook for “Diamonds On the Soles Of Her Shoes,” and a show-stopping “You Can Call Me Al,” engaging the crowd in hand-clapped rhythm.  Simon closes with one last classic, “The Sound of Silence,” in a potent solo acoustic rendition of the Simon & Garfunkel standard that first introduced his immense talent to the world a half-century ago.

"Paul Simon is one of those rarities among the icons of contemporary music: he just keeps getting better," says Austin City Limits executive producer Terry Lickona. "He continues to amaze with new songs that display his musical curiosity and sense of adventure, while bringing a fresh energy to songs that have been such a big part of the American songbook for so many decades. As an admitted long-time ACL fan, he was perfectly at home on our stage, and it shows!"

Rock 'n' Roll Royalty on display: Everly Brothers, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Scorpions

Several essential documentaries and a remastered live album from the Fab Four are available now.

Artist: Everly Brothers
Title: Harmonies From Heaven (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: The Everly Brothers, the Beatles, Bo Diddley
Tell me more: "Any musician with a set of ears was influenced by the Everly Brothers," Graham Nash says at the beginning of the excellent documentary film Harmonies From Heaven, newly available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital. Later on, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards opines: "They were the country side of rock 'n' roll." "Harmonies From Heaven" features not only Nash and Richards, but Art Garfunkel, Dave Edmunds, Albert Lee and many more influential musicians and industry insiders who discuss how they were influenced by the Everly Brothers. From 1957 to 1962, brothers Phil and Don Everly scored success on both the pop and country charts with a string of undeniable hits, and the energy and magic of the brothers' ascension is celebrated across the documentary. In addition to the 90-minute documentary Harmonies From Heaven, there is a bonus disc with a full-length concert film captured at a nightclub in Sydney in 1968 featuring the Everly Brothers performing "Bye Bye Love" "Wake Up Little Susie," "Cathy's Clown," "All I Have to Do Is Dream" and many more unforgettable classics. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: The Beach Boys
Title: Classic Albums  Pet Sounds (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson
Tell me more: The 11th album released by the Beach Boys was definitely a keeper. Pet Sounds is one of those amazing albums like the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and the Zombies' Odyssey and Oracle that continues to win converts as time races on. And the wonder of the Beach Boys' masterpiece is wonderfully detailed courtesy of the latest "Classic Albums" documentary series, Classic Albums  Pet Sounds available Sept. 23, 2016. The creation of "Pet Sounds," recorded in late 1965 and early 1966, is well detailed in this winning documentary that is bolstered by interviews with all the surviving members of the Beach Boys and other involved in the disc's creation. Available on both DVD and Blu-ray, the new release of Classic Albums  Pet Sounds includes more than 30 minutes of additional interviews not included on the original broadcast version. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: The Beatles
Title: Live at the Hollywood Bowl
You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles
Tell me more: Just when you think you have heard everything the Beatles have ever recorded, along comes another jewel to help celebrate the legacy of the Fab Four. Released earlier this month, the Beatles' Live at the Hollywood Bowl (available on audio CD, vinyl and digitally) truly captures the energy and fan frenzy of Beatlemania. Recorded at the Hollywood Bowl during a trio of sold-out summertime dates in 1964 and 1965, the original recordings have been remastered by Giles Martin, the talented son of the Beatles' late producer George Martin. The great news now, that is unlike the 1977 vinyl release, the Beatles' stellar voices and musicianship can be heard clearly above the girls' screams. In addition, there are four additional bonus tracks not included on the original release. Information: thebeatles.com.

Artist: Scorpions
Title: Live in Munich 2012 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: AC/DC, UFO
Tell me more: After more than 50 years, Germany's Scorpions are still very much in the game. One of rock's most enduring and best-ever hard rock outfits, the quintet's legacy and distinctive sound is celebrated across the new concert film Live in Munich 2012. Filmed at the final concert stop of the Scorpions' "Sting In The Tale" world tour, the event finds the band delivering a powerful punch at the Olympiahalle in Munich, Germany on Dec. 17, 2012, a true homecoming show. Highlights include the power ballad "Still Loving You," rockers "Rock You Like A Hurricane," "The Zoo" and "Big City Nights," and the timeless political-minded ballad "Wind Of Change." The Rolling Stones 'Havana Moon' To Be Released On Multiple Formats on November 11, 2016

I know, it's only rock 'n' roll but I like it...

'HAVANA MOON'
The Rolling Stones Live In Cube to be released on multiple formats on November 11, 2016
VIEW TRAILER HERE

New York, NY (September 27, 2016)--On November 11, 2016 Eagle Rock Entertainmentwill release ‘’Havana Moon’’ by The Rolling Stones on DVD+2CD, Blu-ray+2CD, DVD+3LP plus a special Deluxe Edition.
Good Friday - March 25, 2016 - is a date that will go down in both Cuban and Rock ‘n’ Roll history. The Rolling Stones became the first rock band to play a massive free outdoor concert to hundreds of thousands in Havana. This historic concert was captured by award winning film director Paul Dugdale and the result is:
‘HAVANA MOON’ - The Rolling Stones Live in Cuba.
The British rockers' free show attracted a million people in the country's capital city in the same week as President Obama became the first US President to visit Cuba in 88 years. TV News Networks around the world reported that Obama was ‘the warm up act’ for the Rolling Stones. As the Stones took to the stage under a perfect ‘Havana Moon’ in front of an ecstatic crowd everyone knew that this was a life changing cultural moment for a country on the brink of change. There was nothing that was going to come between the band and their eager fans including the Vatican in Rome who had objected to a big rock ‘n’ roll concert staged in Havana on a Good Friday.
Mick Jagger welcomed the massive crowd: “Finally the times are changing, Cuba we are so happy to be here" and joked with his bandmates during the performance describing them as "the revolutionary Ronnie Wood, drummer Charlie Che Watts, and compadre Keith Richards". They played all the big hits including "Jumpin’ Jack Flash", "It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll", "Paint It Black", "Honky Tonk Women", "Start Me Up", "Brown Sugar", "You Can’t Always Get What You Want" and "(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction" in the two hour plus performance all captured here on Havana Moon.
As a Cuban Stones fan said, “Wow never, ever, ever did I think we would see this happen. Tonight has been a dream come true for me”, while another said: “Simply fantastic - this is a moment I have been dreaming about for a really long time. I have just witnessed the most important concert in Cuba because this is The Rolling Stones.”
The critics agreed:
“The Stones put on a stunning performance in Havana” - New York Times
“Spectacular and formidable” - The Guardian
“I have never seen anything quite like it” – Sunday Express
“Unforgettable night in Havana - the Stones rocked the place” - Standard
“Epic and history making” - Daily Telegraph
The Rolling Stones - Havana Moon released by Eagle Rock on November 11, 2016 in multiple formats.
Track Listing 1) Jumpin’ Jack Flash 2) It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It) 3) Out of Control 4) Angie 5) Paint It Black 6) Honky Tonk Women 7) You Got the Silver 8) Midnight Rambler 9) Gimme Shelter 10) Sympathy For The Devil 11) Brown Sugar 12) You Can’t Always Get What You Want 13) (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
Now, the magic and excitement of that historic night can be enjoyed on DVD in various formats with over two hours of the best rock n roll band in the world.

Jack's 11th show, the radio station's last at Irvine Meadows, is a fitting finish

My review of Jack's 11th Show (held on Friday, September 23, 2016) was originally published on the Orange County Register Web site on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016. A big thank you to Kelly A. Swift for the use of her great photos! Robert Kinsler

Ian Astbury, left and Billy Duffy of The Cult

Jack's 11th Show

With: Jane's Addiction, the Cult, Garbage, Everlast and House of Pain, Violent Femmes, Chevy Metal
Where: Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre
When: Friday, Sept. 23

By ROBERT KINSLER / CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Anyone who went to Irvine Meadows on Friday night not knowing the legendary landmark will soon be closed is now well versed in both the fate and 35-plus-year history of the venue.
The majority of artists who performed at Jack's 11th Show offered tributes to Irvine Meadows. The fact that this and every one of Jack FM’s previous festivals had also been held at Irvine Meadows made this an especially poignant farewell.
Taylor Hawkins, of Foo Fighters
fame, joined by Stephen Perkins
The only good thing about this inevitable goodbye was how the artists rose to the occasion and turned in memorable performances that were able to solidify why live music in this scenic setting carved out into an Orange County hillside can be so special.
The day began with a special side stage performance by Chevy Metal. “Can you believe they are closing Irvine Meadows?” said singer-drummer Taylor Hawkins, who led the outfit through an eight-song set of covers. Hawkins recalled attending his first show at the amphitheater in 1982, a bill featuring a Freddie Mercury-led Queen and Billy Squier. “Let's send out the last couple of Irvine Meadows shows out in style.”
Chevy Metal’s set featured mostly faithful versions of crowd pleasing rockers, including Squier‘s “The Stroke” and Queen’s epic rocker “Tie Your Mother Down,” the band’s lesser known gem “Dragon Attack” and the David Bowie-Queen classic “Under Pressure.”
Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes.
Then the action moved to the main stage beginning just after 5:30 p.m. with a wonderful set from Violet Femmes. How great that the troupe opened things up with a fiery “Blister in the Sun” and over the course of a mere 32 minutes delivered similarly mighty takes of “Kiss Off,” “American Music,” “Gone Daddy Gone” and other infectious acoustic punk-styled songs. The trio's Oingo Boingo-meets-B-52's groundbreaking sound seems to resonate and exhibit more staying power with each passing year, as evidenced by bassist Brian Ritchie’s admission: “We were at Jack's 1st Show.”
Although Erik Francis Schrody (better known by his stage name Everlast) no longer has a commanding voice (especially during the tandem folk-rock mini set of his “Put Your Lights On” and a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”), a performance of House of Pain’s 1992 hit “Jump Around” got the crowd to do just that.
Shirley Manson of Garbage
For sheer artistry, the night belonged to Garbage. The band was fueled by intoxicating electronica-meets-alt rock material that was performed with both power and nuance, with Scottish singer Shirley Manson proving she remains among the most mesmerizing personalities in modern rock.
Songs spanning from Garbage’s 1995 debut to the band's latest disc Strange Little Birds afforded Manson and company to draw the audience into her world of darkness and hurt; the taut “I Think I'm Paranoid,” “#1 Crush” (with the songstress performing much of it crouched or crawling on the stage) and an ethereal “Only Happy When It Rains” provided intensity aplenty. A version of “Empty” also impressed with Manson dispelling the final line a cappella.
The Cult’s distinctive rock brand had the audience hooked much more convincingly here than when the Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy-led band opened for Guns N’ Roses at Dodger Stadium last month. As the band performed a fast-moving, hour-long set (including the riff rock AC/DC worthy “Wild Flower” and “Lil‘ Devil” as well as more sweeping material, notably “She Sells Sanctuary”), the fans around me were on their feet and even seemed to appreciate when the band veered into unknown material.
New cuts “Deeply Ordered Chaos” and “Birds of Paradise” off the troupe’s latest album Hidden City provided additional depth to the Cult outing. Hard rocking takes on “Fire Woman” and “Love Removal Machine” provided the perfect way to build things to a big finish.
Guitarist Dave Navarro, left, and Perry Farrell of
Jane's Addiction closing out Jack's 11th Show
Finishing up the night was Jane’s Addiction, whose 75-minute set allowed the Perry Farrell-led collective to perform a wide range of material. The group’s brew of hard rock (featuring tons of metal guitar work courtesy of Dave Navarro) and neo-psychedelic stylings came with a number of female dancers who performed around, amid and even overhead the band. There were blinding pyrotechnics, strong performances of material from the opener “Stop” and the band’s thrilling “Been Caught Stealing” to the closer “Jane Says” and, of course, more tributes to Irvine Meadows.
“Do we really have to shut this place down?” Farrell asked early in the band’s set. “(I've had) So many good times in here.”
Count Jack’s 11th Show as another one.

Sigur Rós remains a wonder

Photo: Kim Kinsler
Sigur Rós always delivers an impassioned otherworldly concert experience. The Icelandic trio comprised of singer-guitarist Jón Þór Birgisson (better known as Jónsi) bassist Georg Hólm and drummer Orri Páll Dýrason did so again throughout a sold-out 110-minute concert at the Hollywood Bowl last night (Saturday, September 24, 2016).

The concert was divided into two parts. The first half of the night began with a stunning new selection titled "Á". Of course, the capacity crowd loved the intense performance of “Glósóli,” which came late in that first half.

The second half featured them performing behind a screen where you could see them, but them were positioned in a "twilight" world of lights and images.

In the second half, one of my favorite of the band's songs, "Saeglopur," was delivered more sparsely than when I've seen it performed with a larger ensemble in the past. But it was still powerful, with Jónsi's falsetto as powerful as ever. I wasn't reviewing the concert last night, but for fans of the group who want to read an in-depth assessment of the night, check out writer Kyle B Smith's review on MXDWN here.

The night allowed the trio to perform a mix of well-known and new material. Here is the setlist:

The fusion of music, stellar symphonic-styled compositions and technology continues to expand the scope of the trio's magical performances, as evidenced by some of the images that my wife Kim and I took during the concert last night.
